Allen Thomas A brother-in-law of Lieutenant General Richard Taylor, (469) was born in Howard County, Maryland, December 14, 1830. Graduated from Princeton in 1850, he studied law, was admitted to the bar, and practiced in Howard County for a time. After his marriage he removed to Louisiana, where he became a planter. At the beginning of the Civil War he organized an infantry battalion of which he became major; when it was expanded into the 29th Louisiana Infantry, Thomas was appointed colonel to rank from May 3, 1862. Serving during the Vicksburg campaign, notably at Chickasaw Bluffs, he was captured at the termination of the seige, and after his parole, carried General Pemberton's report to Richmond. He was assigned later to collect and organize paroled prisoners west of the Mississippi. He was promoted brigadier general from February 4, 1864, and assigned to his brother-in-law's department in command of five Louisiana regiments and a battalion. He later succeeded to the command of the division upon General Polignac's departure for Europe. General Thomas had a varied and distinguished career after the war as planter, Presidential Elector, professor (and member of the board of supervisors) at Louisiana State University, coiner of the New Orleans branch mint, and U. S. consul and minister to Venesuela. He declined a Congressional nomination in 1876. From 1889 until 1907 his residence was Florida; in the latter year he moved to a plantation he had bought at Waveland, Mississippi, dying there on December 3.He is buried in the family vault of his wife at Donaldsonville, Louisiana.

Joseph Octave Landry born on June 15, 1835 and was the son of Amadeo Landry and Emma BLANCHARD Landry of Louisiana. Joseph Octave Landry's grandfather was Traismond Landry, who served as Lieut. Governor of Louisiana. Joseph Octave married Sophie KENNEDY, who was born on August 5, 1839, of Baltimore, Maryland. Sophie was the daughter of Dr. William E. Kennedy of Baltimore, Maryland and Jane Thatcher CARR of Philadelphia. The union of Joseph Octave and Sophie produced some eight children including Fred Joseph Landry who was born August 30, 1869 in Louisburg, Louisiana. A family tale of J. O. and Sophie tells of the following, with regards to the common practice of "camp followers" during the Civil War. "...All my mother-in-law said about Sophie was that she traveled with J. O. and no one could move on until she had bath and feed the babies. She would bath them at the creek and when they were properly taken care of the could move one but not until. Her father was Frederick Landry son of J. O. and this information came from [the] family. Joseph Octave was a tall man by the standards of his day -- "...towering over six feet in stature, robust and red faced in proportion and physically powerful." Joseph Octave passed away in 1889, at fifty-four years of age, and is laid to rest in the tomb of the Association of the Army of Tennessee in the Metairie Cemeteries in New Orleans. According to records, there is an application for Confederate Widow benefits on file at the Archives in Baton Rouge on behalf of Sophie P. KENNEDY. 10 August 2001 - Contact with living relative: Andrea Finan 3 September 2001 - Biography Added to "Veterans" Section 3 September 2000 - Burial Site: Metairie Cemetery, Orleans, Parish - Louisiana Veterans: Burial Sites
