Francis (Fearn), John, Pvt., 2nd Lt., Co. B,
28th (Thomas') Regt. La. Inf. En. March 29, 1862, New Orleans, La.
Roll for April 30 to Aug. 31, 1862, Present. Nurse in Camp Hospl., on
daily duty. Roll for Sept. and Oct., 1862, Absent since Oct. 10,
1862, with leave. Sent home for clothing for Co. Present on Roll for
Oct. 31, 1862, to Feb. 28, 1863. Captured and paroled at Vicksburg,
Miss., July 4, 1863.
Civilian Data: (14 September 2000) John (Fearn) Francis was a member
of Co. B., Elam Guards (DeSoto Parish). This man, who was born in
England, accused of a crime of receipt of stolen property, was then
shipped off to the penal colonies of Australia. There, he worked off
his sentence, met and married a wife -- Ellen Malley, a native of
Tasmania, at St. James Old Cathedral in Melbourne, Victoria,
Australia.
After working the gold mines in the Australian gold
rush, he was advised to come to Louisiana and grow cotton or sugar
cane. John, along with his wife came to Louisiana and eventually
settled in Mansfield, Louisiana. John eventually volunteered for the
war and served with the 28th Thomas' Regiment Louisiana Infantry at
the Siege of Vicksburg where he endured as others alongside him
endured the terrible ordeal. He was able to give some aid and
assistance to the suffering that went on unchecked at Vicksburg, for
John was detailed as a nurse. Upon the surrender of Vicksburg, John
received a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant...possibly for his heroic
actions in aiding the sick and wounded...for that is how he signed
his Vicksburg surrender document.
John appears to have returned home to his wife and
three children -- Eliza, Mary and baby William. Later in the war, the
Red River campaign began and it is understood that John participated
in this action...more than likely as his former duties dictated--as a
nurse in the hospital, aiding and caring for the wounded, sick and
infirmed -- both north and south. John did not survive this campaign,
for John perished during or slightly after the Battle of Mansfield.
There was a fire at the hospital where John was probably working and
in the process of removing the wounded and injured from danger, some
patients and some staff were killed in the fire. That is where it is
believed John perished -- caring for the sick and wounded, as he had
done so at Vicksburg.
By today's standards, John would probably have been
awarded the Medal of Honor for his devotion to duty. Then, only God
knows what his reward was. It is believed that after the battle, his
wife Ellen, left with the children and returned to England to inform
his family of the untimely death of their beloved son -- and then,
she returned to her home in Australia. There she began a new life and
a new branch of the Fearn family tree.
It is not known as to the exact burial site of John
Fearn Francis -- nor is their an application for Widow's Confederate
pension benefits on file in the Archives in Baton Rouge. All that we
are left with is a wonderful tale of a very heroic man who traveled
three continents to face his destiny!
Should you care to read the poignant story of John
Fearn Francis and his odyssey, you may do so by going to our Veterans
Section. An additional exciting bit of information is that a
descendant of John Fearn Francis is in the process of publishing the
story of the life of John Fearn Francis and hopefully all will be
able to share his wonderful life.
