Additional Information (10 February 2003): It is strongly believed that the soldier listed as August Verret of Co. H., is indeed the ancestor of the contributor. His ancestor is Augustin Verret, a.k.a. August Verret. August/Augustin married an AUCOIN (first name uncertain). This marriage produced a child whom they called Emma. August's wife died shortly after Emma was born and Emma was raised by relatives. Emma Verret married Edmond DUROCHER and this marriage produced seven children. One child was Edith DUROCHER who is the mother of the contributor. Most of the relatives of Edith live in St. Mary Parish and some live in St. Martin Parish. The contributor of this material visited Franklin, in St. Mary Parish. He was shown a war memorial that listed the names of veterans who hadserved in various wars. The memorial listed August Verret as having fought in the Civil War. August was also referred to as Augustin by the contributor's relatives. His mother's middle name was also Augustin. A check of the Confederate Pension Application records at the Archives in Baton Rouge list an application on file on behalf of a Numa Augustin Verret who was "Captured 4 July 1863 at Vicksburg" and who is shown to have served in 1st Regiment Heavy Artillery, Bull Battery, the Gunboat's "Cotton" and "Mary T.", the "Scout" unit, St. Martin's Rangers, Fuller's Company, King's Company, Fuller's Artillery, as well as Co. K., 8th Louisiana Infantry Regiment. Numa Augustin Verret is listed as having come from St. Martin Parish. This particular Pension Application is fairly large, containing some 24 pages. It is not know when August/Augustin passed away nor where is laid to rest as of this writing.
