Battle Flag
of the
28th Thomas' Regiment Louisiana Infantry
...Flag design is based on a small torn
section of a regimental battle flag which is on display in
the Confederate Museum, New Orleans, Louisiana. 19 May 1865,
the regiment was disbanded at Mansfield, LA. Usually when a
regiment was disbanded the flag was torn into ten pieces and
a piece given to each of the ten company commanders.
(Placement of Battle Inscriptions is speculative and based
on similar Confederate battle flags of the same period.)

the Brothers: Hyatt
At this time, we do not have any photos of
the Hyatt Brothers: Archibald Enoch, Doctor Solomon, Elias
Marion, and Jasper Newton. Should any of the Hyatt family
descendants have such photos of these gallant civil war
veterans and be willing to share them with other members of
the 28th Thomas' Regiment Louisiana Infantry (Volunteers)
descendants, we at the 28th Thomas' would love to add the
photos to this page honoring the memory of these four
brothers who served their cause well and fought gallantly at
the Battle of Chickasas Bayou/Bluffs and the Siege of
Vicksburg.

the Hyatt Brothers
a Brief Family History
~*~
The four Hyatt brothers who enlisted together with the
28th (Thomas') Louisiana Infantry Regiment were the
children of Samuel Terrell Hyatt, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth
Etheridge (whose brother Benjamin served in the 24th
Mississippi Infantry Regiment). Samuel had a total of ten
children, nine of whom were boys. The military services of
the other five sons are not known at this time. Samuel was a
school teacher who was born in South Carolina, lived for a
time in the Washington County, Alabama area, and moved from
the Ellisville, Mississippi area about 1856 with his wife,
his sister Henrietta and her husband. Apparently his other
children also established themselves around present-day
Fields, Louisiana. The present Hyatt High School was named
for this man. Samuel has many decendants in the Beauregard
and Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana area today.

farmer. He moved back to LA and died on Feb 26, 1907 at
Windham Creek, Calcasieu Parish, LA and is buried in the
Hyatt Family Cemetery in Fields, LA. His wife lived until
Feb 19, 1919 and is buried at the same place.

~ Biography ~
Elias Marion Hyatt--Elias Marion seems
to have been a hard man to stop. CSA records show that he
was at both the Vicksburg capture and parole and was present
again for parole in Pineville, LA in July, 1865. Of Elias,
only slightly more is known than for Archibald Enoch. Elias
married in July 1866 in Newton, TX to a Mary Ann Hoosier
(who may be the sister of D.S. Hyatt's wife), and had one
daughter of whom we know named Fredonia in 1867, and was
alive for the 1880 census. Elias was reportedly occupied as
a farmer.
Unfortunately the tombstone in the Hyatt Family Cemetery
lists him as 1835-1848 and provides nothing more. It is
believed that he was predeceased by his wife in 1881 and
that he passed about 1885.
Elias Marion Hyatt b: Feb. 16, 1838, Wayne Co., MS
(reportedly at the fork of the Big and Little Thompson's
Creeks). d: Abt. 1885, Sugartown, Calcasieu Parish, LA.

at Bearhead Creek in Calcasieu Parish, LA June 23, 1909. His
wife was born Nov 28, 1842 and died April 29, 1926. She must
have been a strong woman to outlive him and bear that many
children in those times. Her ancestry is also known in
detail, as she is reportedly a Mayflower descendant.
