Battle Flag
of the
28th Thomas' Regiment Louisiana Infantry

...Flag design is based on a small torn section of a regimental battle flag which is on display in the Confederate Museum, New Orleans, Louisiana. 19 May 1865, the regiment was disbanded at Mansfield, LA. Usually when a regiment was disbanded the flag was torn into ten pieces and a piece given to each of the ten company commanders. (Placement of Battle Inscriptions is speculative and based on similar Confederate battle flags of the same period.)

the Brothers: Hyatt

At this time, we do not have any photos of the Hyatt Brothers: Archibald Enoch, Doctor Solomon, Elias Marion, and Jasper Newton. Should any of the Hyatt family descendants have such photos of these gallant civil war veterans and be willing to share them with other members of the 28th Thomas' Regiment Louisiana Infantry (Volunteers) descendants, we at the 28th Thomas' would love to add the photos to this page honoring the memory of these four brothers who served their cause well and fought gallantly at the Battle of Chickasas Bayou/Bluffs and the Siege of Vicksburg.

the Hyatt Brothers
a Brief Family History
~*~

The four Hyatt brothers who enlisted together with the 28th (Thomas') Louisiana Infantry Regiment were the children of Samuel Terrell Hyatt, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth Etheridge (whose brother Benjamin served in the 24th Mississippi Infantry Regiment). Samuel had a total of ten children, nine of whom were boys. The military services of the other five sons are not known at this time. Samuel was a school teacher who was born in South Carolina, lived for a time in the Washington County, Alabama area, and moved from the Ellisville, Mississippi area about 1856 with his wife, his sister Henrietta and her husband. Apparently his other children also established themselves around present-day Fields, Louisiana. The present Hyatt High School was named for this man. Samuel has many decendants in the Beauregard and Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana area today.

~ Biography ~

Doctor Solomon Hyatt--Doctor Solomon married Dec 02, 1865 in Jasper, TX a Nancy Emily Hoosier (b: June 3, 1848, d/o David Hoosier and Lucy Adelaide Clark). Nine children are known to have been born, Frances Elizabeth born 1870, Ida Ellen born July 17, 1872, Eliza Sophronia born Jan 12, 1875, Littleton Taswell born March 24, 1878, Henry Hartwell born Oct 6, 1880, Charles Clinton born July 27, 1883, Walter Seymore born March 18, 1888 Richard Raymond born June 5, 1890 and Maude Estelle born August 22, 1892.

Doctor Solomon apparently lived for a while in Texas, as he shows up in the 1870 census in Independence, Burlson County, TX. Doctor Solomon was reportedly occupied as a farmer. He moved back to LA and died on Feb 26, 1907 at Windham Creek, Calcasieu Parish, LA and is buried in the Hyatt Family Cemetery in Fields, LA. On Roll of Prisoners of War, Captured and paroled at Vicksburg, Miss., July 4, 1863. On Roll of Prisoners of War, Paroled Alexandria, La., June -, 1865. Res. Pineville, La.

~ Biography ~

Elias Marion Hyatt--Elias Marion seems to have been a hard man to stop. CSA records show that he was at both the Vicksburg capture and parole and was present again for parole in Pineville, LA in July, 1865. Of Elias, only slightly more is known than for Archibald Enoch. Elias married in July 1866 in Newton, TX to a Mary Ann Hoosier (who may be the sister of D.S. Hyatt's wife), and had one daughter of whom we know named Fredonia in 1867, and was alive for the 1880 census. Elias was reportedly occupied as a farmer.

Unfortunately the tombstone in the Hyatt Family Cemetery lists him as 1835-1848 and provides nothing more. It is believed that he was predeceased by his wife in 1881 and that he passed about 1885.

Elias Marion Hyatt b: Feb. 16, 1838, Wayne Co., MS (reportedly at the fork of the Big and Little Thompson's Creeks). d: Abt. 1885, Sugartown, Calcasieu Parish, LA. buried: Hyatt Family Cemetery, Fields, LA.

~ Biography ~

Jasper Newton Hyatt -- Jasper married Martha Louise Jacobs in Newton TX on June 6, 1864. Jasper Newton also moved back to Louisiana after his marriage, as his children were born there. Jasper was primarily occupied as a farmer.

Records of 12 children exist, most of whom married. They are Theodocia born and died 1866, Julia born July 24, 1868, Geneva born June 22, 1870, Jasper Newton, Jr. born Oct. 4, 1872, Herbert Holson Hyatt born November 18, 1874, Martha Eliza born January 1877, Caroline born March, 1979, Nora Ella born Feb. 1, 1880, Riley Young born March 12, 1882, Frances Hyatt born May 9, 1885, Clora Cleveland born July 8, 1890 and Renner Dellar born July 8, 1892. Jasper Newton died at Bearhead Creek in Calcasieu Parish, LA June 23, 1909. His wife was born Nov 28, 1842 and died April 29, 1926. She must have been a strong woman to outlive him and bear that many children in those times. Her ancestry is also known in detail, as she is reportedly a Mayflower descendant.
