Battle Flag
of the
28th Thomas' Regiment Louisiana Infantry

...Flag design is based on a small torn section of a regimental battle flag which is on display in the Confederate Museum, New Orleans, Louisiana. 19 May 1865, the regiment was disbanded at Mansfield, LA. Usually when a regiment was disbanded the flag was torn into ten pieces and a piece given to each of the ten company commanders. (Placement of Battle Inscriptions is specualtive and based on similar Confederate battle flags of the same period.)

~ Biography ~

MARCELOUS ELMER HASHA was born in Louisiana on March 24, 1833. He is most likely the son of the Marsla Hasha listed in the 1846 poll tax records of Jefferson County, Texas. Marcelous is listed with the John Jerie family in Jefferson County, Texas in the 1850 Census. In 1857, he married Mary Emaline Prater, 1839-1908, the daughter of William J. Prater and Elizabeth F. Lyons.

Marcelous and Emaline are listed in the 1860 Census in Jefferson County, Texas with their first child, Edwin Ernest, 1858-1943. On the same census page is Emaline's brother, Edwin, their nearest neighbor. Marcelous and Emaline are in the 1880 Census in Calcaseiu with some of the children listed with them. Thus far,
they cannot be found in the 1870 Census.

On April 15, 1862 in New Orleans, Marcelous enlisted in the Confederate army. He was assigned to Company I, "Calcaseiu Tigers", of the 28th Louisiana Infantry, Thomas'. He was captured and paroled at Vicksburg on July 4, 1863. On October 11, 1864, he was sent on a special mission to "point out to the Enrolling Officer of said Parish (Calcaseiu) the absentees and deserters of this command". He remained with the regiment until it was disbanded on May 19, 1865 at Mansfield, Louisiana.

Marcelous purchased land north of Vinton, Louisiana in 1879 and 1890 in Township 9 South, Range 12 West, Sections 27 and 34. He appears in tax records in Calcaseiu in 1865, 1866, 1877, and 1878, also from 1880 to 1886. He reappears in tax records in McLennan County, Texas from 1887 to 1890. According to family tradition, Marcelous and the older sons worked on farming equipment between planting seasons.

Marcelous and Emaline had a professinal photograph taken in Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas in 1900 or earlier. Marcelous died in 1900 in central Texas, burial place is unknown. Emaline appears in the 1900 Census in Mills County, Texas, listed with three of her children, John, Valary, and Ada. She died in Waco in 1908.
