Synopsis

A spy needs to get a microfilm from his contact, but his enemies won't make it easy.

Some words about "Spy Story"

Spy Story is the koboldian blockbuster, not being a typical Quick Movie. It is an old project that has been left behind for a while and ended up as an above-average film from Kobold.

Originally conceived as a plot for another Quick Movie, this short story was written in 1989. The idea was to have a collection of original stories ready to go, to be shot whenever there was time, reducing the need of improvisation. "Contato" (as it was at first called) was not immediately filmed. It consisted basicly on two scenes. On the first one, a spy anxiously waits for his contact, who is to bring him a microfilm, while their enemies are also waiting for the meeting, watching him carefully. On the second scene, quite short, there is the final move, as a surprise.

While living in Germany, the director of Kobold returned to this story, creating new scenes, giving the plot a better structure and a stronger context. But it was not before one year after his return to Brazil that this project was restarted.

It was only during the winter vacation of 1991 that this film was finally shot, having a greater production than a regular Quick Movie would have. This means that the basic working scheme that had been widely used on other koboldian films would be partially abandoned, as an attempt to reduce improvisation. Shooting took three days. It was organized in a way in which each scene would be filmed as an individual Quick Movie, so we had a better control over the whole structure of the movie. In Die Nachtträum, that was first intended to be the koboldian blockbuster, for instance, filming was organized based on individual shots, and that resulted on the loss of coherence among the parts.

Besides that, Spy Story would be the first spoken film from Kobold since Poquer Interminável. More than that, it follows the trend (observed in Chased) of improving sound editing. In fact, it is one of the strong aspects of the film, for it represents a completely new concept for Kobold. The use of a domestic mixing technique, which required no specific mixing equipment, represented a big evolution on sound editing. Nowadays it can be easily accomplished with a domestic computer, which can also provide further resources like filters and effects, but back in 1991 we would have to rely on the use of analog equipment.

The sound track from Front 242 helped providing the film some style, giving it a somewhat noir, yet contemporary, atmosphere.

But even before the choice of this sound track, during preproduction, there was an effort to give the film some style, by improving the quality and beauty of the images, not only in terms of photography and composition, but also on art direction, make-up, costumes and scenery.
