Synopsis
A boy dreams of himself being chased on obsessive knightmares.
Some words about "Chased"
The story for this Quick Movie was inspired by the synopsis of one episode of a three-episode film from the Amazing Stories series. The basic idea was a chase in which the pursuer was only seen through mirrors, or any other reflexive surface.
We made our own version in December, after a lot of changes in the original plot. A boy dreams of a chase; and in his dreams, he sees himself being chased, not knowing of it. He wakes up many times, and each time he falls asleep again, the chase proceeds. By the end, the dream turns out to be premonitory.
It is a slow chase, based not on running, but on suspense. The final attack seems to be constantly postponed. Antecipation was supposed to be terryfing by itself.
The dreams are obsessive and were not particularly creative (with the exception of the last one). This is due to the fact that they were improvised during filming. The general structure of the plot was defined before shooting, but the details - including the dreams themselves - were left to be defined at the set.
The transitions from reality to the dreams and vice versa are fine as they are, although they could have been improved by some movement.
A touch of unreality, fitting the dreamy context, is strengthened by the sound effects and music. First suggested by the reading of a book on amateur filmmaking sound techniques and by Rumble Fish from Coppola, the use of sounds to create the proper atmosphere was also inspired by the sounds of wind and distant thunders that we experienced at the set while shooting.
Sound editing was basicly done by cuts. There is no mixing, no music and sound effect at the same time, not even in short transitions. But the final result is good enough.
Chased is important for its new approach towards the use of sound. The following koboldian films not only lean on this approach, but also reinforces it.
