Synopsis
One night during a camping, awaken by strange knightmares, a boy decides to break into the house he and his friend found in their way to the camping site. It turns out to be a dangerous wax museum.
Some words about "Museu de Cera"
The basic idea for this film was taken from an old German expressionist film, "Das Wachfigurenkabinett" (something like "The Wax Museum"), although the plot was our own.
The written screenplay was simply a draft containing genereal ideas to be developed during the shooting. The story is about a curious boy that finds out wax dolls in a misterious house, and a tyrant who lives there enslaving invaders, transforming them into pieces of his wax collection.
In this film, the tyrant and the friend of the curious boy are played by the same actor, Ricardo.
The original idea had very much of design in it besides the plot. We wanted this film to look like Beetlejuice, that is, we thought of a comics design, something like a new wave style, inspired by some pop groups from the beginning of the 80's like Devo, or B-52's. We wanted it to look weird, a colorful tragedy. But of course, we were not able to comply with this original art direction concept due to economical reasons. The film was made with no budget, as the other Quick Movies, although this is not a typical Quick Movie, for there was something like a preproduction and it was not shot in just one single afternoon.
As location we used an old abandoned house in Guilherme's farm, where we spent two days shooting. We basicly isolated ourselves from the rest of world during these two days in order to make our film. That was a nice team work experience.
Although most of the scenes were shot during day time, as they were indoors, and supposedly happening at night, we used artificial lights, so we could get dramatic light effects.
Some costumes were borrowed from "Die Nachttrum", shot in July, and some furniture was borrowed from the farm. Even though there was no budget, as we had a preproduction, we could have been more careful in regarding to make-up and costumes, without having to spend extra money for it.
As we were not able to give the design a comics touch, the movie tended to something serious, and dark. The soundtrack had to follow this atmosphere. Def Leppard opens the film up to the point where the knightmare ends. Then, after some night silence, Sisters of Mercy's Dominion conducts the film through its core up to its end. Audio editing here was slightly different in this film than in the former koboldian films. We tried not only to provide the proper atmosphere to the scenes but also to help video editing to transfer the action from one scene to the other. We were experimenting.
