PROLOGUE
Scene 1 - Nurse's Station
(OPEN ON RYAN, IN CANDY-STRIPER UNIFORM, TURNING TO LEAVE NURSE'S STATION. SHE PRACTICALLY BUMPS INTO DJ, WHO CARRIES A LARGE STACK OF CHARTS)

DJ
Whoa -- look out.

RYAN
DJ! Sorry, I wasn't looking. How's it going?

DJ
Not too different from my last job. I get beeped. They tell me to pick up some charts and where to deliver them. (RYAN LAUGHS)

RYAN
So the field training actually did pay off.

DJ
Yeah. Excuse me, I gotta put these back. (MOTIONS TO NURSE'S STATION)

RYAN
Can't you even talk a couple of minutes?

DJ
I don't want to break any rules.

RYAN
I'm a friend of the head nurse. You're connected.

(TAKE DJ NOT SURE)

DJ
Yeah.

RYAN
Are you feeling all right?

DJ
Sure. I feel great.

RYAN
You coming tonight?

DJ
Where?

(TAKE RYAN DISAPPOINTED THAT HE DOESN'T REMEMBER)

RYAN
My birthday party.

DJ
Ohh. No -- I don't think so. I'd be a little out of place there.

RYAN
You'll know everybody there.

DJ
Except one. (TAKE RYAN PUZZLED)

RYAN
Who's that?

DJ
This guy you're all bent out of shape over. You're not gonna have a 16th birthday party without him.

RYAN
(BACKPEDDLING) Ah -- yeah -- I mean, no -- he's not going to be there. He's kind of -- well, he's out of town. I won't have a date.

DJ
I don't play that way.

RYAN
What do you mean?

DJ
I'm not into substitute dating. Besides, I have a rule. You don't trespass on another guy's territory. Especially when he's not home.

RYAN
Yeah but --

DJ
(OVER) Thanks for the invite though. It'll probably be a great time for you.

RYAN
(COVERING) Oh -- definitely.

DJ
Now I really have to put these away. I'll catch you around.

(HE MOVES TO NURSE'S STATION TO REPLACE THE CHARTS. RYAN WATCHES AFTER HIM, DISAPPOINTED)

RYAN
(QUIETLY) Sure.

Scene 2 - Max's Office
(GO TO: GABRIELLE ENTERING MAX'S OFFICE. MAX AND JILL HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR HER)

GABRIELLE
Good morning. Have I kept you waiting long?

MAX
No. Gabrielle, this is Jillian Coleridge Ryan, my legal counsel.

(TAKE GABRIELLE EYEING HER CLOSELY)

GABRIELLE
Another Ryan?

MAX
Jillian is married to Frank Ryan, Siobhan's sister.

JILL
How do you do?

(JILL EYES GABRIELLE WITH A CERTAIN SENSE OF FASCINATION. GABRIELLE PICKS UP ON THIS)

GABRIELLE
Is it wrong?

JILL
What?

GABRIELLE
My dress. I thought under the circumstances, black would be appropriate.

JILL
It's fine. Though I don't personally view this as a day of mourning.

GABRIELLE
Of course you don't, darling.

MAX
Jillian has prepared all the papers. Everything's ready to sign.

GABRIELLE
(TO JILL:) How efficient you must be.

JILL
(HOLDING BACK) Yes. Now then -- what you will be signing is a voluntary notice of appearance. What this means is that the divorce proceedings can go on with both party's technically "before the court." You understand that if both parties, or their lawyers, don't appear for the proceeding, the divorce is not binding.

GABRIELLE
(LOOKING AT MAX) Yes, I do.

MAX
I'm very grateful for your coming to the office on such short notice. It's important to me that we get this over with as quickly as possible.

GABRIELLE
Well, it's so nice to have an excuse to get out of that dreary hotel room. Even if it is for a divorce.

MAX
As soon as this is final, you will have plenty of time and money to house-hunt.

(TAKE JILL, EYEBROWS RAISED)

JILL
That's a bit of an understatement. I'm sure you will find the settlement more than generous.

GABRIELLE
(LAUGH) I take it you regard Maxim's offer as ludicrous.

JILL
Max pays me to protest his interests legally and monetarily. That's precisely what I'm doing here today.

GABRIELLE
How fortunate for Maxim to have such a champion.

JILL
Max -- I'll have your assistants come in to witness the signatures.

(SHE EXITS. GABRIELLE TURNS HER ATTENTION TO THE PAPERS. SHE IS IMMEDIATELY IMPRESSED)

GABRIELLE
Things must be going very well, indeed.

MAX
I told you I would take care of you.

GABRIELLE
Yes. And just think, Maxim -- if Anton's will stands, I'll not only have this, I'll have half of ANTRA as well.

MAX
You know my position -- I will not let that happen. I'll fight the will with all my resources.

GABRIELLE
If your father's will is legal and binding, and I'm entitled to a share of ANTRA, then I want it, Max.

MAX
Don't count on it.

GABRIELLE
Are you forgetting Anton's letter? According to the terms of the will, if you challenge it, that letter will be opened. Aren't you afraid of the contents?

MAX
As a matter of fact, I'm quite eager to have it opened. (TAKE GABRIELLE CURIOUS) Are you ready to sign?

GABRIELLE
This change in you surprises me. You act as though marrying this Ryan woman is more important than ANTRA.

MAX
It is.

GABRIELLE
(PLAYFULLY) I think I might be jealous.

MAX
Does that mean you're changing your mind about the divorce?

(TAKE GABRIELLE UNDECIDED)

Scene 3 - Laslo's Apartment
(GO TO: LASLO WITH BERNIE, HIS UNDERWORLD FRIEND. BERNIE IS SHOWING HIM THE PHOTOGRAPH HE TOOK OF SIOBHAN)

LASLO
This will work. Thanks, Bernie.

BERNIE
She's great looking.

LASLO
She's a lady. First-class.

(TAKE LASLO STARING AT PHOTO)

BERNIE
She doesn't look like your type -- As a matter of fact, she was pretty tight with this rich looking dude when I took the picture --

LASLO
(OVER, HANDS HIM SOME DOCUMENTS) I need two passports. One for me and one for her. And I need them now.

BERNIE
No way, Laslo. Passports take time.

LASLO
I'm out of time. Get these done now. I don't care what it costs.

BERNIE
We're talking very big bucks.

LASLO
We're talking very important reasons. Me and the lady have to take a trip together -- today.

(TAKE BERNIE, CURIOUS ABOUT THE URGENCY. TAKE LASLO DETERMINED AND:)

FADE OUT

ACT I
Scene 1 - Nurse's Station
(UP ON RYAN COMING AROUND THE CORNER. SHE ENCOUNTERS BETSY, ANOTHER CANDY-STRIPER, WHO IS WHEELING A BOOK CART. BETSY IS 18, PRETTY AND SELF-ASSURED)

BETSY
Hi Fenelli -- how's it going?

RYAN
Grim, Betsy. Real grim.

BETSY
The head nurse on your case about something?

RYAN
No, it's me. NASA should take me on the next space shuttle and release me into orbit.

BETSY
Why have you declared yourself a disaster?

RYAN
Because I am a disaster -- I'm a total failure with boys. A real zod.

BETSY
You don't act like one.

RYAN
You've never been on a date with me. It's pathetic.

BETSY
You want to talk about it?

RYAN
There's not much to talk about. I've spent half my life in a convent school. I guess I never realized I'd come out of there in a habit.

BETSY
Sounds to me like all you need to do is relax -- follow your instincts.

RYAN
I don't have instincts -- that's the problem.

BETSY
Correction -- you don't see them. Believe me, you're turning sixteen -- you have instincts.

RYAN
I wish I had half of your confidence.

BETSY
Ryan, you're the one who's got all the friends around here --

RYAN
(OVER) Girl friends, old men, old ladies --

BETSY
(OVER) Every intern and resident turns his head when you walk by -- you're a regular Mary Poppins.

RYAN
I don't want to be Mary Poppins. That's the problem.

BETSY
Ohhh -- I got you. (BEAT, VERY SERIOUS) You in love with this guy?

RYAN
I don't know. I don't think so.

BETSY
Perfect.

RYAN
What?

BETSY
That makes him practice material. You can get out all the bugs so you're ready when Mr. Right comes along.

RYAN
I don't know if I like the sound of that.

BETSY
That's the convent talking again. Remember what I said -- you have to loosen up. Who is this object of your affection anyway?

RYAN
He's a new guy here at the hospital.

BETSY
(SURPRISED) You mean one of the interns?

RYAN
No -- his name is D.J. LaSalle.

(TAKE BETSY BRIGHTENING)

BETSY
You're kidding. My antennas picked him up when he first walked in the door. He's an ultra-fox.

RYAN
Yeah. And things were going great until I tripped over my two left feet. (EMBARASSED TO ADMIT THIS TO BETSY) I think he's pretty experienced. When he saw my true colors, I think he realized it was time to bolt.

BETSY
Show him some new colors.

RYAN
That's going to be tough now. I got so uptight when he started to come on to me, I said I had a steady guy. He backed off like I had the plague.

(TAKE BETSY LAUGHING)

BETSY
Just tell him your little crush on this other guy has dissolved like snowflakes. Tell him he's your new crush.

RYAN
Just come right out and say that?

BETSY
You want to grow up to be a nun?

RYAN
You have a point.

BETSY
Of course, if this is all too heavy for you -- I'd be glad to take DJ off your hands.

RYAN
You're a real pal.

BETSY
Hey -- somebody's gotta make him happy.

RYAN
Yeah, well, you just give me a couple of ideas and I'll take it from there.

BETSY
Okay -- first of all, when you talk to him next, look him dead in the eye. And when you have his undivided attention, start staring at his lips.

RYAN
Really?

(JACK ARRIVES IN BACKGROUND)

BETSY
They can't handle that. Then make sure your arm rubs against him or straighten his collar or something. You need body contact to put him on the ropes.

(JACK APPROACHES ON THIS LINE)

JACK
Is this a private conference?

(TAKE RYAN ABOUT TO FAINT)

RYAN
Ah -- no -- no, Dad --

BETSY
Hi, Mr. Fenelli.

JACK
Hi, Betsy. I didn't mean to interrupt anything important. I just thought I might talk the birthday girl into a milkshake or something.

BETSY
No problem. I have to go anyway.

JACK
If you want to finish your conversation --

BETSY
No. I was boring Ryan with my college schedule. I'll be a Freshman --

JACK
It's a very exciting time for you.

(BETSY SMILES, MOVES OFF)

JACK
This is an exciting time for you, too. Sixteenth birthday. Maeve and Johnny are closing the bar for the party. Ryan's will be all yours tonight.

RYAN
That'll be fun.

JACK
How did we get here?

RYAN
Get where, Daddy?

JACK
At sixteen. You were always supposed to be a little girl -- one I could hold -- one I could cuddle when she was afraid. (SMILES, REMEMBERING) You remember how scared you used to get during a storm?

RYAN
Terrified.

JACK
When you were three, you used to call it wightening and hippo thunder.

RYAN
(LAUGHS) I did?

JACK
Yeah. I made up this story about how the thunder was a bunch of hippopotamuses dancing on the clouds. I thought it would make you less scared.

RYAN
Did it?

JACK
No. As a matter of fact, I couldn't take you to the zoo until you were five. You knew that's where the hippos lived.

(THEY BOTH LAUGH)

RYAN
Well, you can stop feeling guilty. I think I'm ready for the zoo again.

JACK
I guess you are. And that's been the hardest thing to learn, I suppose. You're not a little girl anymore. You're a young lady. That must mean that I'm growing up, too.

(RYAN HUGS HIM)

RYAN
Oh, Daddy - I love you so much.

JACK
I love you, too. And I hope tonight will be very special for you.

RYAN
Yeah. I really think it could be.

(TAKE RYAN THOUGHTFUL AND:)

FADE OUT

ACT II
Scene 1 - Max's Office
(UP ON MAX AND GABRIELLE AS BEFORE)

GABRIELLE
There has been a great deal of change these past few years, Maxim. The old Gabrielle would have fought your marriage to Siobhan, tooth and nail. You would not have slipped through my fingers so easily.

MAX
And now? (BEAT)

GABRIELLE
I will sign the papers.

MAX
Thank you.

(HE PRESSES THE BUZZER ON THE DESK. AFTER A BEAT, JILL AND MAX'S TWO ASSISTANTS ENTER THE OFFICE)

MAX
We're ready now.

JILL
Okay. (SHOWING GABRIELLE THE PAPERS) Will you sign here, here and here?

GABRIELLE
So many times. (SHE BEGINS SIGNING)

JILL
And Max, if you will sign here, here and here. (HE SIGNS THE PAPERS AS WELL) Fine. And now the witnesses. (SHE SHOWS MAX'S ASSISTANTS WHERE TO SIGN. THEY DO) And that's that.

MAX
(TO GABRIELLE:) That wasn't so painful, was it?

GABRIELLE
I suppose not. But I hope this is something you won't regret.

MAX
I don't think there's any danger of that.

GABRIELLE
If you should change your mind, Maxim -- please call.

MAX
(SMILES) I'll keep that in mind.

GABRIELLE
Good day, Mrs. Ryan.

(SHE NODS TO JILL AND EXITS)

JILL
Goodbye.

MAX
(TO ASSISTANTS) Thank you for witnessing the signatures.

ASSISTANT #1
You're welcome. Will that be all?

MAX
Yes.

(THE ASSISTANTS LEAVE)

JILL
Well -- that was certainly a lot easier than I expected. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop.

MAX
Gabrielle is very clever. She will not fight if she can't be sure of winning.

JILL
Does that also apply to your father's will?

MAX
She intends to do battle over that. But I'll break it, Jillian. (SMILES) With your help, of course.

JILL
Are you sure you want to entrust half of ANTRA to me?

MAX
I've already entrusted the whole company to you.

JILL
Gabrielle will most likely hire the biggest estate lawyers in New York.

MAX
I'm well aware of that.

JILL
And I'm very worried about this letter business. Chantal's obsession with keeping it sealed borders on hysteria. It's possible it contains more than you think.

MAX
My mother has a great deal of pride. If that letter reveals my father's relationship with Gabrielle, she will do anything to keep it secret. And he knew that.

JILL
He expected you to protect your mother's pride?

MAX
I'm sure of it. (BEAT) I want an appointment at the bank, Jillian.

JILL
When?

MAX
Today. We're going to open that letter and get all of this over with, once and for all.

JILL
Now, wait a minute, Max -- I think we should -- (SHE STOPS, SEEING MAX'S DETERMINATION) All right. I know that look. I'll set it up.

(SHE PICKS UP THE PHONE.)

Scene 2 - Pub
(GO TO: GABRIELLE BEING SEATED AT MARGUERITE'S TABLE IN THE PUB)

GABRIELLE
Hello, Marguerite.

MARGUERITE
Madame.

GABRIELLE
You won't be able to call me Madame DuBujak much longer.

(TAKE MARGUERITE PUZZLED)

MARGUERITE
Why not?

GABRIELLE
I just came from Maxim's office. With three little signatures, I signed away my marriage.

MARGUERITE
(DISTRESSED) Oh, Gabrielle, you didn't --

GABRIELLE
It should put a little sunshine in Chantal's day. How is our grande dame?

MARGUERITE
(RELUCTANT) She keeps to her room most of the time --

GABRIELLE
Marguerite, what's the matter with you? You've always known everything that happened in the family --

MARGUERITE
(OVER) They respect privacy.

GABRIELLE
Relax, will you? (BEAT) Remember how much fun we used to have, gossiping in the old days?

(MARGUERITE SMILES AT THE RECOLLECTION)

MARGUERITE
Yes, we did.

GABRIELLE
Well, then -- what's Chantal up to now?

MARGUERITE
It's not very amusing, Gabrielle --

GABRIELLE
You're not going to hold out on me now, are you?

MARGUERITE
Your mother-in-law is trying to help her son. She loves him very much.

GABRIELLE
And just how is she -- helping -- now?

MARGUERITE
Well -- I did overhear a conversation between Chantal and the gentleman from the New York Trust Bank.

GABRIELLE
And?

MARGUERITE
She was offering to put all her finances in his hands if he would give her that sealed letter in the safe deposit box.

GABRIELLE
What did he say?

MARGUERITE
I don't think he's given her an answer yet. To tell you the truth, Madame -- I'm secretly hoping she succeeds. If that letter is as awful as you say it is, Monsieur could be hurt terribly.

GABRIELLE
Yes -- he could.

MARGUERITE
I couldn't bear that. He has been through enough --

GABRIELLE
(PATTING HER ARM) Don't worry. I'll have a little chat with the banker. Perhaps there's something I can do.

(TAKE GABRIELLE SCHEMING AND:)

FADE OUT

ACT III
Scene 1 - Nurse's Station
(UP ON BETSY, FLIRTING WITH DJ. RYAN WATCHES IN BACKGROUND)

BETSY
So, you want to be a doctor when you grow up?

DJ
I already am grown up.

BETSY
That's what I heard.

DJ
From who?

BETSY
I have my sources.

DJ
You should deal direct. Cut out the middle man.

BETSY
What a great idea. (THEY LAUGH)

(TAKE RYAN TAKING A DEEP BREATH AS SHE APPROACHES THEM)

BETSY
Hi, Ryan.

RYAN
Hi.

(SHE STARES AT DJ. HE IS A LITTLE UNCOMFORTABLE)

RYAN
You mind if I talk to DJ alone for a couple of minutes?

(TAKE BETSY, UNDERSTANDING)

BETSY
No problem. He's all yours. See ya later. (SHE MOVES OFF)

RYAN
Do you think sixteen is very old?

DJ
(UNSURE) No -- I mean, it's pretty young really.

RYAN
That's what I thought.

DJ
Why?

RYAN
Well -- I've been thinking. I don't know why I'm acting like I'm married or something. I'm supposed to be sixteen. I'm too young to get all hung up on one guy.

DJ
Yeah?

RYAN
This is when I should be playing the field, right?

DJ
If that's what you want.

RYAN
That's exactly what I want.

(TAKE RYAN STARING AT DJ'S LIPS)

RYAN
You and I have been through a whole lot together. It's no secret I like you.

DJ
That's good to hear.

RYAN
So if you decide to come to my party tonight, I'll personally see to it that you have a good time.

(TAKE D.J., REALIZING HER MEANING. HE'S TAKEN ABACK)

DJ
Hey, look -- I didn't mean to put any pressure on you, Ryan. I hope you understand that.

RYAN
Perfectly.

DJ
And you really want me to come tonight?

RYAN
Unless you have some problem with me.

DJ
No way. You're my kind of girl. I'll be there.

(TAKE DJ CHECKING HER OUT IN A NEW LIGHT. FINALLY HE TURNS AND EXITS, MOUTHING SOME POP SONG)

Scene 2 - Bank Office
(GO TO: REYNOLDS SHOWING GABRIELLE INTO THE BANK OFFICE)

REYNOLDS
I hope there wasn't some sort of mix-up.

GABRIELLE
How do you mean?

REYNOLDS
The meeting to open the letter isn't until later this afternoon, Mrs. DuBujak.

GABRIELLE
Yes, yes -- I know. I wanted to stop by this morning to read the will. I know Maxim kept a copy for himself, but in the commotion at our last meeting, I simply forgot to ask for one.

REYNOLDS
I can understand that. It was a highly charged situation. (BEAT)

GABRIELLE
Well, then?

REYNOLDS
I don't know if I can --

GABRIELLE
(OVER) Mr. Reynolds -- I simply want to see exactly what my husband wishes to take away from me. I'm entitled to that, aren't I?

REYNOLDS
Of course.

GABRIELLE
You can sit here and watch me read if you think I'm going to run off with it.

REYNOLDS
I'm sorry. You have every right to make such a request.

(HE REACHES INTO HIS DESK AND PULLS OUT THE SAFE DEPOSIT BOX. HE BEGINS TO OPEN IT)

Scene 3 - Max's Office
(GO TO: MAX LOOKING OVER THE DIVORCE PAPERS THAT HE AND GABRIELLE SIGNED EARLIER. HE SMILES, PICKS UP THE PHONE AND DIALS. AFTER A BEAT SIOBHAN ANSWERS AND WE CUT TO TWO-WAY CONVERSATION.)

SIOBHAN
Hello?

MAX
Hello, my love.

SIOBHAN
(SMILES, THEN CATCHES HERSELF) Hi. How are you?

MAX
Couldn't be better. I have a wonderful surprise for you.

SIOBHAN
Okay -- shoot.

MAX
No, no. This one you have to see in person.

SIOBHAN
Max, I --

MAX
(OVER) Forget the rules. This changes them. I'll be right over.

(HE HANGS UP. STAY WITH SIOBHAN, CURIOUS. BEAT, THEN A KNOCK AT DOOR. SHE GOES TO IT AND OPENS TO MAN FROM NASA (JACK KONTES).)

KONTES
Hello, Detective.

SIOBHAN
Jack Kontes -- it's been a long time. (THEY HUG) Thanks for stopping by. I know you have a plan to catch --

KONTES
When Siobhan Ryan calls, it must be important. What can the NASA photo lab do for you?

SIOBHAN
Well -- I told you about this blowup I have.

(SHE GETS IT FROM THE TABLE)

SIOBHAN
Here it is.

KONTES
(LOOKING) Pretty grainy.

SIOBHAN
Yeah. That's the problem. You see that figure there? Beside the statue?

KONTES
Barely.

SIOBHAN
I need to know who it is.

KONTES
Okay.

SIOBHAN
Can you give me a clear picture?

KONTES
I'll do my best.

SIOBHAN
How long does your best take?

KONTES
Still tough, aren't you?

SIOBHAN
You bet.

KONTES
I'll work on it today and get it to you tomorrow. Fast enough?

SIOBHAN
Perfect. (KISSES HIM ON CHEEK) I knew I could count on you, Jack. Thank you.

KONTES
I owe you a few.

SIOBHAN
Here's the negative.

KONTES
Lemme get out of here --

SIOBHAN
Okay. Bye.

(HE LEAVES. TAKE SIOBHAN PLEASED)

Scene 4 - Laslo's Apartment
(GO TO: LASLO, PACING HIS APARTMENT LIKE A CAGED ANIMAL, HEARS A KNOCK AT THE DOOR)

LASLO
Come on in!

(BERNIE ENTERS WITH A BROWN ENVELOPE)

BERNIE
Okay -- I got 'em.

LASLO
(GRABS ENVELOPE) It's about time.

(HE OPENS IT UP AND PULLS OUT TWO PASSPORTS)

BERNIE
You're welcome.

(LASLO LOOKS AT ONE. TAKE CLOSE-UP OF SIOBHAN'S PHOTO ON THE PASSPORT)

LASLO
Beautiful.

BERNIE
My people do nice work.

LASLO
Here.

(HE HANDS BERNIE AN ENVELOPE OF MONEY)

BERNIE
How much?

LASLO
What we settled on. Count it if you don't trust me.

BERNIE
You need to relax a little, Laslo. The trip will probably be good for you. When will you and your lady be back in town?

LASLO
We won't be coming back.

(TAKE BERNIE PUZZLED. TAKE LASLO SCHEMING AND:)
