--|Chapter 1: A New Plan|--

Page 5

"There isn't much in the desert that will obstruct the path of the wind, such as trees. It's probably also close to some sort of mountain range, or maybe even..."

"Enough, Mr. Science!" Zero interrupted again. "It doesn't matter why it's in the desert, it's just there! We have all the information on Nuemia, now let's make a plan. What are we going to do about the Dark Matter's armies?"

"I'm going to sneak into Nuemia," Alex announced, surprising everyone who had not heard of this decision.

"How come he gets to have all the fun?" groaned Jab.

"Alex, you can't do this alone! The armies will outnumber you! You won't survive!" Zero argued.

The entire room went into silent suspense as Alex and Court Jester began considering the problem.

"I wanna go, too!" whined Jab.

"We can't take the risk," Alex responded, "or at least, I can't. I can sneak in the temple undetected much more easily if I'm alone."

"If we all just sit here while you go on this mission to Nuemia, it's going to be really boring," Jab argued.

"That's for sure!" agreed Ralda.

Alex looked at Ruby for an answer. Ruby looked back at Alex curiously, wondering why he was staring at her. Suddenly, Alex hit on an idea. "I'm going to need all of you to keep the Dark Matter's attention away from Nuemia. That will help me sneak into the temple."

"I guess I have something to do with this?" Ruby wondered, since Alex was still staring at her.

"You make sure the Dark Matter believes that all of us are heading for Jorica." Alex replied.

"I see!" Court Jester exclaimed. "We will create a diversion by advancing toward Jorica temple, keeping the Dark Matter's focus, and forces, away from Alex!"

"Perfect," said Alex.

"It's settled, then," Zero announced. "Tomorrow, we will eject Alex from the ship. You are ready, aren't you?"

"Completely," Alex replied.

"And you're going all on your own?" asked Mari, who was concerned about Alex.

"Yup. I've lived in Neoasis on very little for nearly three years. I'm sure with a few supplies, I can easily make the trip."

"Well, take care of yourself," urged Mari.

"Don't worry," said Ruby, "Alex is one tough muffin!"

Alex smiled. "Not as tough as you," he said.

With that, Alex left the control room, thinking of how great he must be that Ruby would think so well of him. He hadn't felt very good about himself in a long time. Perhaps - he thought - he really was worth something. Alex daydreamed about his upcoming adventure as he returned to his Neopolis home. Even as he prepared for bed that night, he fantasized about how proud everyone would be when he returned, and how wonderful it would be to live with the rest of Absolute Zero for all his life.
