FAST EDDIE'S NOTES ON THE
MORNING SESSION AT MACOMB, AUG 10 I'm just killing time up here between practices, but the morning practice excited me so much that I had to share some stuff:) It was a very spirited session, one of the best I've seen from these guys in the last four years. They were only in helmets and shorts, so I was a bit disappointed about that at first, but man were they intense:) The offense made quite a few plays and moved the ball with some consistency, but everything they got, they had to EARN the hard way. The defensive coverage is absolutely fabulous between McCleon's great preseason charge, Lyght's consistency, and Bly's aggressiveness. Even the LBs are starting to learn their roles. Remember that there were no pads and of course hitting the QB is taboo always in camp, so they are doing it without the aid of much rush to speak of. That's a big advantage for the offense. Still it took some great throws from Green--who came out this morning and picked up where he left off Saturday night--and the vivid imagination of Mike Martz to accomplish what they did. It's very much a continual competition out there between the offense and defense. The players and the coaches are very competitive about these practices. Last week I felt the offense was WAY behind. Today it was very different... they are certainly catching up in a hurry. They have made great strides in just a couple of weeks. It's almost as if they are inspired by their performance Saturday night... the starters on offense know that they thoroughly dominated a very good Raider defense and I think they surprised themselves with how easily and efficiently they did it. The arrival of #28 couldn't have hurt morale much either. That's who I'm here to see today and I'll have more on him later. Even the coaching staff seems to have really turned it up a notch. Top to bottom they were the most intense I have ever seen them (and this is 2 weeks before even the next preseason game!). They were much more critical this morning, very different from the laid back emphasis on building the players up that I saw last week here and in Champaign. I think they are raising the bar. The players got a taste of what they can do and now the coaches are raising the expectations. I believe the entire organization can FEEL success on the horizon. In the end, the morning practice came down to the 2 minute drill, 11 on 11, to claim the winner of the session. I never realized a practice could be so exciting! Unfortunately, it seems I have to give up this machine now, so I'm headed back down to the practice fields. I have a lot of notes on individual players and coaches and such, and as usual for whatever they are worth I'll type them in later. And I'm leaving you in suspense as to which unit won this morning. Tee-Hee! I expect they'll put the pads on now and I'm going to see some hitting:) |
