NOTES ON THE RAMS/COLTS SCRIMMAGE BY BLACKSUN (AKA "METAL RAM), July 31

Here are some things I heard on the KFNS broadcast.  I'm sure FE will give us a more detailed look when he posts. Remember that this is REALLY random.

Announcers said that Rams LB's and DL were doing a great job stuffing the run, and the LB's were covering ground very well. Collins made fine pursuit from the WLB position to tackle Holmes.  The pursuit by the D was fierce. The Rams were fielding some strange configurations on D, and had a situation where they placed 5 DL men on the line.  But right after they said that the Colts pulled off a nice play fake, and threw deep for a score.

Rams had the ball next and were making some nice yards up field until the drive stalled.  I'm not quite sure how Green looked in this period. This is when the whole broadcast went downhill as they started an interview with various individuals and Colts management.  So much for a live broadcast!!  Also, they managed to interview Colts management and no one from the Rams.  Then they went onto callers, and hardly covered the game at all.  Just spot play.

From what I could determine, the successive drives by the Rams with Warner leading were VERY productive.  I don't know what DV thinks of Warner now, but he went  9-11 for 134 yds and 2 tds, which isn't all that bad!!  I did hear that the long ball to Small was ugly, and it would've been picked off if the two Colts defenders hadn't collided into each other.  All I can say is that some of Warner's passes must have been great if he pulled of those kind of numbers.  Those numbers don't happen by accident!

In one of the drives Greg Hill went in for a 1-2 yard TD.  From what I heard Cameron Spikes is A MAN out there, and gave some nasty drive blocking when it counted!  Chad Levitt got some good catches from what I heard. I heard nothing about Rich Coady, but DV said he played extremely well, and the announcers also said that he's been overlooked a bit.  I guess he hot one real nice interception, and was all over the field. Our WR's did well, and from what DV said Mac Cody was making some nice catches out there.  Holt was smoking it up from what I heard (with the announcer calling him Issac Holt... probably not too far from the truth). OT Willie Jones got burned pretty badly on a pass rush.  They said he looks too big.  I'm sure the heat will start to work on that!

Robert Holcombe seems to be a RB back from the dead!  As you know he has taken the starting unit away from Harris, and from what I've heard had a great day. He is going to be used both at FB and RB (like Alstott?) and had a great 54 yard run, but I'm not sure if it was from the FB or RB position.  I have yet to hear how Robert's blocking is, but I know that if he keeps performing like this we'll hear his name called a lot more this season. Looks like Harris got humbled a bit for his off-season  'no workout' attitude. I bet DV loves getting his digs in, but in this case he's right on.  Holcombe worked out regularly and Harris decided not to and now is paying the price.

In his interview after the scrimmage, DV said  he really thinks that Kurt Warner is a player. DV seemed a little more comfortable with Warner-I  think he's truly starting to believe he can handle the 2nd string job. He was VERY impressed with Rich Coady. When asked about Green, DV said he thought he did a fine job... ie. he did alright. When asked about Germaine he said that he accomplished what he should have  at this stage in his development and was making great reads. DV seems a bit concerned about his boy Henley and his turf toe. You mean he might actually have to cut one of his guys?   Ahhhh!! help!!!  :^) Ah, it sure feels good to be deep in one position for once!

Bad news. Henley looks to have sprained his toe (turf toe) and possibly even broken it on that nasty Illini turf, and then on the same drive that Hill scored, Cameron hurt his hand by falling on the concrete I'm going to state my displeasure with turf once again.  Can I tell you how much I despise turf?  I wish SO dearly the Rams would somehow move back into Busch , back outdoors,  into a REAL football atmosphere!  Astro turf is EVIL folks... truly evil stuff!  I will congratulate ANY NFL organization that finally pulls the roof off  of one of those god awful domes and gets into REAL football conditions! Time to get real, and get real turf... even if it's shipped in for  the game!  Can we make the TWA like the Diamond Backs stadium now?  :^)

Other players  were dinged up.  Wistrom got a stinger (didn't he get the same injury on ST's last preseason?).  I can't remember offhand who else got dinged up, but I think there was one other.
