Name Meanings

Ever wondered where a name in the Harry Potter books came from? Here's your chance to find out!

Lupin- This word is derived from the Latin word "lupis", which means wolf. (Remus Lupin is a werewolf)

Voldemort- The French translation is Flight of Death

Fluer Delacour- The French translation is Blossom of the Court. Many blieve it is Blossom of the Heart, confusing cour and cuer. (Fluer also translates to flower)

Sirius- The name of Harry's godfather is also the name of a star in the constellation of Canus Major, or "The Big Black Dog". (Sirius can transform himself into a big black dog)

Snape- This word has no actual meaning, it is simply a village in England that J.K. Rowling found to have an interesting name

Draco Malfoy- Draco is Latin for Dragon. Malfoy is French for Bad Faith

Narcissa- The name of Draco Malfoy's mother (Lucius's Wife)comes from a word which means "self centered". Therefor, she is a very conceited and stuck-up person

Dumbledore- The Old English translation for the Headmaster's last name is Bumblebee. J.K. Rowling selected this name because she pictured Dumbldedore roaming the halls of Hogwarts, humming a tune as a bumblebee would do (Dumbledore enjoys chamber music)

Harry Potter- Harry is J.K. Rowling's favorite name for a boy and Potter was the name of a family she lived by at one time
