Programs of PFI

Integrated Small Tillers Development (InSTill)

There are three types of small farmers here: the tenants/leases, small owner-cultivators and seasonal rice farm workers (hurnal). The great majority of them are poor because they earn very little from their farms and have no other sources of income. Their meager earnings are further depleted by high production costs, interest payments from loans, and the shares they render to the landowner if they are tenants or leases. MCF tries to address these issues with an integrated program that uses credit assistance as an entry point.

Sustainable Resource Generation(SuRGe)

The forests in Leyte are fast disappearing. One of the major causes are upland farmers who engage in slash-and-burn style of agriculture, leaving patches of the forests burned down and eroded. To prevent this from happening, PFI has set up an ecology farm that tries to demonstrate to farmers how to engage in sustainable upland farming without burning down forests or resorting to chemicals to reap bountiful harvests.

Marine Resource Development (Mar)

Majority of natives in island provinces live along the coasts. The sea has been traditionally their major source of protein. But unhappily, our coastal waters have been ravaged by commercial fishing, then further depleted by municipal fishermen who use all kinds of fishing harmful to the survival of marine life. Thus, corals have been blasted, seagrasses have disappeared, and mangroves used to fuel bakeries, destroying the marine ecosystem. PFI has set a program to remedy the situation, involving the fishing community in the campaign against commercial and illegal fishing in municipal waters and in their restoration.

Environmental Advocacy, Research and Networking (EARN)

Environmental degradation cannot be abated only by piecemeal projects. We believe there has to be some policy change in the institutions responsible for the protection of our environment. To be able to do so effectively, some amount of data base building has to be done to have strong basis for advocacy work. Likewise, networking is necessary among NGOs and POs interested in protecting the environment.

Women's Movement Building (Womb)

Women's oppression and exploitation abound in societies where gender equality has not been the norm, and where women are second class citizens. PFI has set up a women's desk to address issues related to the women's situation. In all its programs, this issue has become an integral consideration. In cases where it cannot take an active role, PFI has without reservation given support to groups that do so.

Community Action for Total Community Health (CATCH)

In most rural communities here, medical practitioners are rare. Thus, rural people are prone to sicknesses. The rate of malnutrition is high, and it is usual to find community residents, especially children and old people, afflicted with all sorts of ailments that go untreated. While medical professionals say that most common diseases can be prevented, rural folks are incapable of doing so largely because of insufficient know-how and poverty. PFI has started a health program that endeavors to teach rural folks measures to prevent common ailments from occurring, encouraging indigenous practices to cure them.
