HIV-AIDS Awareness Project

In 1997, the Philippines HIV-AIDS NGO Support Program (Phansup)came over to propose a partnership with PFI in the implementation of an AIDS awareness project that was being implemented nationwide. PFI did not hesitate to accept the offer because HIV-AIDS is a pressing health concern.

An initial investigation of the HIV-AIDS situation in Ormoc did not show alarming trends, although there were signs of growth of sexually-transmitted diseases. The assessment also indicated a lack of awareness among sex workers in the use of preventive measures.

The project involved the dissemination of information among commercial sex workers and the gay community where STDs had shown an increase. The project only lasted for a year. After that, we passed on our contacts to the gays' organization so that they could continue on their own the HIV-AIDS awarensss program.
