Health projects with minorities
PFI's health interventions started with a partnership with the Department of Health. The DOH had embarked on health projects in partnership with NGOs and, in Ormoc, its project involved the minority group who made their living in Brgy. Gaas, a farflung mountain village
The DOH wanted to assist them by enabling them to map out livelihood and health concerns.
The tribal minorities were the Manobos who had migrated from Northern Mindanao where they are abundant. The group in Leyte had been moving from one village to another, all farflung areas. In many areas, they were unwanted by the local governments and the population. They had finally come settle in Ormoc because the place appeared to be more friendly.
In the planning process which we undertook with them, they were able to cite their need for potable water and electricity.
The source of water was two steep hills away which they had to walk to whenever they needed water for drinking and bathing. It was readily assumed that they potable water available, life would be easier for them, they would develop habits of cleanliness and that they could wash more often.
More health projects followed in our Biliran operations. These subsequent health projects gave emphasis to water sealed toilets and building water systems.
