BIRTH Project in Biliran

Biliran Integrated Rice Technology in the Highlands or BIRTH was implemented in the years 2001 to 2002. It was preceded by health projects in Brgy. Villaconsuelo and Kapinyahan. Birth was implemented in two upland rice-growing villages, Lucsoon and Villaconsuelo.

The project was patterned after an earlier project of PFI in Ormoc, Project Offer. While Offer was limited to credit extension, Birth went further to discuss agrarian issues and technology. After a few months of immersion in the two villages, two organizations were formed and the credit program started.

To start off its organic farming scheme, the project introduced organic fertilizers, which the farmers enthusiastically received. Farm trials were started and were found to have been successful. In the meantime, the farmers began a savings program which would make them more self-reliant as far as financing for production is concerned.

Two years ago, the PFI staff also started experiments on system for rice intensification (SRI) which dramatically increased rice production per hectare. This technology is currently being disseminated by the PFI staff in Biliran.
