Networking -> About Citrix ->
Citrix is
a revolutionary networking system made by a company called
Praxis.
In a nutshell Citrix
works by taking most of the processing away from your pc and does
the work at the server (mind you it would be a very powerful
server). What this means is that under a citrix network, the
processing part of most things you do such as writing a letter in
word, doing calculations in excel etc, would be done by the server.
The benefit of having the sever do all the work via thin client
network, is the reduction in cost of marinating and upgrading the
network, because currently every few years employers are forced to
upgrade their office computers to take advantage of the more power
hungry software (I don't want to name any names....microsoft...
opps). By taking all the processing to the sever via a thin client
network, this eliminates the need to upgrade individual office
computers and instead only the server will be upgraded as needed. I
think it is claimed by citrix that by taking the processing to the
server, the user can get along fine on a 386x computer, which sounds
pretty good.
(*** in the contexts of
this page, the use of the word "server" can also mean
"fileserver"***)
Citrix uses the thin
client technology.
A quick explanation of
how thin client works:
When you type or move
your mouse you send a very "small" piece of information down your
network cable to your office fileserver computer. The fileserver
then processes your input and send back a picture of the result,
either letters appearing in a document or the mouse pointer moving
across the screen, for display on your screen. These screen signals
are very small and travel at lightening speed through your network
cables, too fast for you to notice any kind delay between your input
and the screen display.
