Beltane May 1st

Other Names:
Bealtaine, Bhealltainn.

Information:
Beltane is a Sabbat of fertility and life. It is a celebration of the love between the God and Goddess. The Great Rite is performed in many rituals, and it is said that years ago, if a man asked a woman to marry him and she agreed, they would run off into the woods and spend this night together. Many people say that the Celtic women would ride broomsticks like a hobbyhorse round the field to ensure fertility for the growing crops. If you dont have a field lying around you could ride a broomstick over the herb garden you planted at Ostara =) You can make daisy chains, which are used for protection.

The most popular theory of where the name Beltane comes from is from an old word meaning balefire. On this night bonfires are lit, traditionally by two people striking two flints together to represent the passionate love of the God and Goddess. If you have a fire, you can jump over it and as you do, make a wish, or you could use the smoke to purify almost anything (dont try purifying petrol) Save up bits of left over candles and the bits of wax youve dripped everywhere and throw them in the fire to get rid of the old and bring in the new.
