For many Wiccans, the Altar is a focal point for our worship and is sometimes placed in the North or the East of the circle, although it can be placed anywhere that is apporpriate. Altars are made out of anything, some are elaborate others much simpler, some are permanent and some are temporary. It really depends upon the person as to how they want their altar to be and what's practical. Your altar can be made out of anything that has a flat surface, from a specially crafted wooden altar to a stone in your favourite part of the woods, as long as you are comfortable where it is, that is the important part. However, if you do practice outside, please remember to leave the place where you are working as you found it and take home everything you brought with you. There is no 'proper way' for your altar to be, although many are based on the following layout:
So what exactly do you put on your altar? As you can see from the diagram above, many magickal tools are placed on the altar. The items that have a correspondence with the God (e.g. athame, bolline) are traditionally placed on the right and those with a correspondence with the Goddess (e.g. bell, chalice) on the left. Many Wiccans decorate their altars according to the upcoming Sabbat or the season at that time. You can decorate the altar with anything, from things that you make in honour of the Sabbat/Season to things that you find while on nature walks, for example blossom flowers in spring and acorns in autumn. You can also cover your altar with an altar cloth. If you do this, I advise putting a plastic cover over the top of the cloth as it would be a shame to have a lovely altar cloth ruined by wax spilled on it. Contributed by SilentCat |
