Make some Incense

The type of incense that will be made here will not be stick (joss sticks), or cone incense. We will be making is known as powdered, loose, herbal, raw, or granular incense. This is any combination of plant materials, perhpas combined with essential oils and a base, which are mixed together and burned or smouldered on charcoal. This then releases the powers and energies of the plants in that particular mixture, thus raising the vibrational levels of the area. Remember, however, that many sweet smelling plants may smell different when burned. Dont be suprised if your incense isnt pleasant to smell, the importance here the vibrations and energies, not the smells.

How to Make a Incense:

Step 1

Firstly you will need to know what you are making the incense for, then you wil need to look up information on the Magickal uses of herbs and find the ones you will need. A great book for this is 'Cunninghams's Encyclopeadia of Magical Herbs' by Scott Cunningham. You will also need a pestle and mortar.

Step 2

Now grind the herbs/herb up using your pestle and mortar, try and get then as finely ground up as you can. You can add some essential oils at this point if you so wish. If your mixture becomes too sticky then add a little salt to the mixture and grind away until the moisture has been removed.

Step 3

When you are happy with your mixture, then you can get some charcoal disks and place the incense mixture on the centre of the disk. There you go you have now made your own incense :)

A note on Charcoal disks:

When using charcoal disks it is better to be safe than sorry. When lit they (if they are self igniting) will become very hot, very quick and can stay hot for hours. So it is best to fill up a bowl with sand or salt and place the bowl on a bath tile or any other fire-proof surface, then place the disk onto the sand or salt. One you have placed the incense onto the middle of the disk it will last for a couple of minutes before you will need to top it up with some more incense.

Top Tip:

Place the charcoal disk in the bowl outside as it is heating up so that your house does not smell like burning coal (Unless you like that smell), bring it in when it has a red glow and is slightly grey.
