Sacred Trees

From time immemorial trees have been regarded as sacred and an essential aspect of religious beliefs, from faerie gateways between two oaks to the mighty world tree, Yggdrasil from Norse mythology.

Trees were seen by the ancients as otherworldly and wise as they bridged the gap between the heavens and the underworld. Despite the lack of respect given to trees by many people in today's world, through deforestation and other harm done to trees, Pagans are very much aware of the power that trees hold and the wisdom within them. Have you ever hugged a tree? I don't mind admitting that I have and as I hugged the trunk that I could barely put my arms around, I could feel the power and wisdom within that oak, coarsing through the living tree. It often makes me wonder how anyone can disguard their lives needlessly when there are better alternatives to cutting down trees.

With all this power running through the trees, it's obvious why Pagans make sacred items from falled branches and twigs. However, trees do not all have the same energy and some are better for certain purposes than others.

In order to help you pick out what tree suits your needs best, I have compiled a list of tree properties below. If you feel connected with a certain tree and it doesn't fit the correspondance below, but you know you want to use it, then please trust your intuition. If you do cut a branch/twig etc. from a living tree, please remember to thank the tree for its gift and to seal the cut with wax (or something similar) to stop the tree from being hurt too much.
