PROCESS OVERVIEW

Here is a brief overview of the house hunting process.  Each item will be explained more thoroughly in a later section.  Familiarize yourself with the procedures so your experience goes much more smoothly.

First, you will select houses from the books in the Housing Office.  There are literally hundreds, so plan on the morning just to browse through the books.

Second, a Housing Office representative will drive you to view the houses.  There are morning and afternoon showings.  You may also ride with others if there is room in the vehicle.

Third, after viewing the houses, you may put a "hold" on the house.  This prevents someone else from taking it while you are negotiating the lease.

Fourth, you will apply for two months advance pay (unless you have it available already), which you will bring to the lease negotiation.  Plan on five to seven working days for your money to arrive in your bank account.  Also plan on it not arriving on time, so have a backup plan.

Fifth, your lease negotiation at the Main Housing Office in Gricignano will take approximately two hours.  You will discuss any issues with the landlord at that time and sign your contract.  You will also apply for utilities.  Plan on another week before you can move into your house (unless you want to live there without electricity).

Sixth, you will finish all of your miscellaneous paperwork like submitting electric meter readings and a landlord/tenant checklist to the housing office.
