INTRODUCTION

We were not so fortunate to have a good unit sponsor when we arrived, so we figured out most of this on our own.  As we went along, we took notes and compiled them here. We hope that this saves you some of the headaches that we encountered. Please let us know how this guide works for you.  We will constantly make improvements based on your input.

If you are authorized to live on the Italian economy, then one of your first priorities is to find a house (or apartment).  Although you are given 60 days Temporary Lodging Allowance (TLA), you should not wait until the “last minute” to begin house hunting.  Once you find a house, you must still wait for the Housing Office to inspect and approve it.  After that, you will apply for two months advance pay for rent, negotiate your lease, and apply for utilities.  This may require an additional two-to-three weeks.  These items will be discussed in detail later.  For now, just be aware that you do not have as much time as you may think.
