My name is Kathleen Whitinger and I student taught  3rd grade in Ferndale Public Schools this fall. I have always believed that teaching is one of the most important and rewarding jobs there is. I believe I can make a difference in the lives of my students.  This to me is a major responsibility, one in which I take very seriously.  I love teaching and find great satisfaction in what I do.

I was nervous, as well as excited, as I began my student teaching experience at John F Kennedy.  All my life I had wanted to be a teacher and now I was finally taking the last step before I could begin my teaching career.  Throughout this experience I learned a great deal about children, as well as myself.  I learned the importance of patience, time management, nurturing, discipline, and to never underestimate the capabilities of your students.

When I think back to the teachers that had an impact in my life, they all shared one thing in common.  They were different.  They did not do things like all the teachers before them,  and they made learning meaningful.   I hope that I will become one of those teachers that will make a difference in the lives of my students.

I will graduate in December 2004 from  Wayne State University  with a BS in Elementary Education. Before I returned to school, I primarily did home day care to be able to stay home with my own children. I have also  substitute taught in Ferndale since 1999. This substituting experience is what helped me see that teaching is truly the career for me.
