Competency 5
Demonstrates knowledge of human growth and development in planning for students, (i.e. mental and physical disabilities, developmental delays, gifted and talented)
| My target student is a student who is gifted and talented. I worked on a lesson plan based on the book The Iliad by Nick McCarty. The student was grouped with 2 other students so they could all benefit and not one person would feel left out. They are still currently working on this project. This replaces their spelling words for the week, the anthology reading during center time. They have used the internet to complete some of the this lesson. |

| The students who pre-tested at 90% or better on Monday are give an advanced list in spelling. The list has the same spelling rules for the week, the list is more challenging. | |
| Students work independently in the Addison Wesley math series are able to take pre tests prior to each chapter. If the score 90% or better, they are go to the next chapter's pre test. Below 90% they then work on the pages that correlate to problems they got wrong. This helps students at all levels. The students who need the extra help are given time and practice on the types of problems they need help with. Those who already know the material are not required to practice the things they know already. They are challenged to move ahead. This program is in place along side the Chicago Math program. | |
| The classroom has a variety of books for the book in the bag homework and silent reading choices. The students are encouraged to read whatever interests them. This helps students of all levels because they are not required to move ahead or stay behind to keep with the rest of the students. The students are encouraged to follow what interests them in their reading. | |
| The computers in the classroom have computer games for all levels in the classroom to be used at center time. Some of the games that are on the computer: Math Blaster, Reading Blaster, Reading Journey, Storybook Weaver, Jumpstart games. | |
| During our communities project, the students were able to work completely at their own level on the end project. One student made a poster with digital pictures and typewritten words while another student used construction paper and made much more of an abstract poster. Both were working at their level, and were able to present their poster and describe the characteristics. |
