Competency 9

Understands and integrates multicultural perspectives to enhance students’ awareness and appreciation of diverse populations

One way  I met this competency was in my community unit. We talked a lot about the differences within our community, within our county, within our state and within our country. We read a story called Roxaboxen by Alice  McLerran and Barbara Cooney. I created a Venn Diagram with the class to show the similarities and differences of our community and Roxaboxen.
At Halloween, we had a grandmother from one of the children come in dressed in traditional clothing to teach children about the origin of Halloween. She helped the students create  a magic wand and read a story to the class.
I tried to pair students up together in different ways depending on the activity. At times, I varied the groups some were boy/girl, higher learners working with the lower learners, free choice by students at times. This enabled all students to work together at different times and get to know one another better.

During election time, I read the book Vote by Eileen Christelow. We talked some about one page that was directed at the fact that African Americans were not able to vote until much later. I do not think children are too young to be exposed to this information, when presented in a matter of fact way.
