Hairstyle. The crowning glory of every Filipina delegate.

The contestant may have a doll like face, may have the height and the figure, may be articulate and regal, wearing the most expensive couture gown there is but ..

if the hair is a mess, who's gonna bother to look?

What hairstyle is best suited for Miss Philippines?

THE
1950'S
***
In keeping up with the rela-
tive conserva-
tive ethics of
the period,
hairstyles-
though full & thick, were well coiffed and as natural as they can be. Yes,
floral adorn-
ments were common!
Miss Philippines 1951
Baby Villareal-Nepomuceno sports the hairstyle typical of  the period. No loose ends, eve- rything in it's place. The clean, polished look of the decade. Good grooming at its very best.
ALL NATURAL YET WELL GROOMED
Hairstyles of this era were as natural as can be. Whether wavy or bone straight, let it be! If at  all coiffed up  and tight in a bun, why not? Judging from the look of this decade, Filipinas were very
much  concerned with the way they look. Never  left the house unless the hairdo was well in place!

THE
1960'S

Clarinda Soriano (extreme left) wore her  hair short and  coiffed at the Miss U pageant in '66. Nini Ramos
(left) opted for the stylish hairpiece of the decade in Miss Int'l '68 while Gloria Diaz, Miss Universe of '69 (right) wore her hair down .
BIGGER
IS
BETTER
The Miss Universe Pageant ends its ban on hairpieces and falls in 1967 and finally allows contestants to wear them in competition. The decade was very much characterized by 'big hair' teased and styled to the max, whether long or short!

Miss International 1979
Aurora Pijuan, Miss Interna-
tional '70 (extreme left), wore her up tightly in a bun as did the statuesque Miss Internatio-
nal of '79, Melanie Marquez
(left). Margie Moran (right), Miss Universe '73 was always
'well done' in  an  intricate hairstyle  all throughout the competition. As we would all recall, the Miss Universe crown kept on slipping from Margie Moran's 'crowning glory' that night in Athens!

Guada Sanchez, Miss Philippines Uni-
verse of '74 (left) wore  her up during
the  parade of nations to match it with her national costume, the TERNO. She later let her hair down for the swimsuit
and evening gown competition. Unfor-tunately, she never made it to the final five. Was it because of the hair issue?
Evangeline Pascual, first
runner-up at Miss World '73, also wore her hair up at all times throughout the competition in London. One of the best groomed
Miss RP ever!

Miss Philippines
Universe 1974
What do all these women have in common? The winning streak of delegates from this decade all wore their hair UP either most of the time or if not always! Filipinas, as proven by the success of this era, just look so GOOD with their hair up and perfectly done in sharp contrast to the flowing tresses of Caucasian and South American delegates. Shouldn't we learn a lesson from these gals?

Chat Silayan, Miss Phi-
lippines Universe '80 (left), wore her hair up for the national costume parade and the swimsuit competition. For the in-
terview, she let it down.
For the  evening gown segment, she had it up again. There's nothing like variety! Desiree Verdadero (right), Miss
Philippines Universe '84
did  pretty  much the same thing, alternating
between 2 styles.
WHE-
THER UP OR DOWN, IT WON'T LET U
DOWN!
Miss Philippines

Up or down? Use both. Variety adds spice! Both Chat and Desiree placed well in Miss Universe. Take a hint.

Miss Philippines World 1994
Cara Subijano, Miss Philippines World '94 (below), wore her hair down throughout the pageant finals night. Earlier, she pulled it up for the preliminaries evening gown video clip.
Had she done the same thing during the eve-
ning gown segment at the finals, she would have possibly ended up in the 'magic three.'
NOW,
GET THE
FOR-
MULA RIGHT
THIS TIME!
Miss Philippines World 1993
Ruffa Gutierrez, Miss Philippines World '93 (above), knew the secret to a polished image and right packaging! Throughout the pageant finals, her hair was always per-
fectly coiffed as only befits a TRUE BEAUTY QUEEN.
Even during the swimsuit competition, Ruffa remained every inch the winner she should be. Shades of Margie Moran in Athens? Definitely!
Miss Philippines Asia
Pacific 1996
THE GOLD STANDARD
Marilyn Maristela, Miss Philippines Asia Pacific 1996 and 1st Runner-Up at the Miss Asia Pacific Pageant, is referred to by many as the 'GOLD
STANDARD' in Philippine Pageant
Mania. Just look! Hairstyle, whether pulled up in a bun for a swimsuit segment (left), or hair down, wavy and  flowing in  another swimsuit segment (right), Marilyn just looks so darn good! Below, for the finals
night  in her evening  gown, hair is back to a classic chignon again and though  she didn't bag the title, this beauty queen  just simply  got the
whole  thing  RIGHT  ALL THE TIME! Marilyn is one classic case
of a gal  who knows  exactly what looks good on her and takes advan-
tage of it to the fullest!
Marilyn Maristela is indeed the 'GOLD
STANDARD' in many ways. She has the look of a beauty queen, perfectly
packaged at all times, and has the com-
bined regal bearing of Margie Moran
and the facial beauty of Ruffa Gutierrez.
Marilyn, why didn't you ever try out for Binibini? Is it too late now?
Miss Philippines Asia
Pacific 1995
Miss Philippines Asia Pacific 1995 Maricel Morales knew the secret formula! She kept her hair  up throughout the entire evening at the Miss Asia Pacific Pageant.
Miss Philippines Universe 1994
Charlene Gonzales (left), Miss Philippines Uni-
verse 1994, not once put her hair up during the finals in Manila. Too bad, Charlene is such a
gorgeous girl who might have benefited much from a more polished look!
Miss Philippines Universe 1998
Miss Philippines of 1998 Jewel
Lobaton tried the best of both worlds for the  Miss Universe competition. Hair  was down during the swimsuit prelimina-ries  but was  pulled up and tight in a secure bun for the evening  gown  competition. Unfortunately, though the hair was  right, the  gown was not alright!
The original winners of the Miss Philippines 1999 Pageant all had their own styles in mind.
Lalaine and Janelle (left and center) both opted for the tradi-
tional while Miriam went casual and just had her hair tied in a ponytail! Not quite the hairstyle you'd see during finals night!

A casual hairstyle (above) is a perfect match  for a casual dress! So natural!
The right way to wear the Philippine TERNO(below) is with a neat hairstyle.
It was not a big surprise at all that Miss
Miriam  Quiambao  won  the  coveted
HERBAL ESSENCE STYLE AWARD
in Miss U '99. The  pictures  speak for themselves!  An example  to follow !!!
Get into the beach mood with a ref-reshing cascade of jet black hair set against an even tone of brown skin!
The one and only Miriam Quiambao, now an icon in the history of Philippine Pageantry, got it right all the way! She let her hair down at the RIGHT TIME, and pulled it back to a neat bun again at the RIGHT TIME! For her Miss Universe portrait (above left), a casual dress calls for a 'casual' hairstyle. For the bathing suit competition, what better way to get into the 'beach mood' than with a cascade of jet black hair? With the shift into the elegance of the evening gown competition, Miriam herself was tranformed from 'baywatch babe' to 'midnight madam.' What better way there is to show off her back revealing evening gown than with her hair pulled out of the way? Just think of what would have happened had she competed in the same evening gown with her hair down! DISASTER !!!
Miriam's one shouldered, back baring daring Halston number was perfectly complimented  by her  polished hair pulled back in a simple tight bun! What a way to top the evening's competition!
Miss Philippines Universe 1999
After Miriam's unexpected success at Miss Universe 1999, one  would think  that the Binibining  Pilipinas  finally got their  act  together with  the obvious  'pattern' that  makes Filipinas shine at their very best in the international arena! With the approach  of  the year 2000, everyone  was filled  with  excitement! The  Miss Philippines  organizers  are at last finally back in track! OH REALLY ? We shall see !!!

....THE SUMMARY

Joanna & Nina looked great with their long hair down  both  for  the  swimsuit and evening
gown competition. Nina looked a  bit silly  in a ponytail!  Kathy didn't look  good with her hair down, but pulled out of the  way, she  looked every  inch a  queen! You see, they have to get the  LOOK  right!

What  went wrong  for Nina in Universe 2000? Was it just the gown  alone or as many have noticed, the  hairstyle was also a grave  mistake? How could a  gorgeous model  and  fine artist
like Nina make such a bad judgement?

......Nina in Evening Gown Before
............Departure for Cyprus

Elegant queen with a hairstyle perfectly complimenting  her show stopping red evening gown! The perfect marriage of the right hairstyle with the right girl wea-ring  the right  gown. Nina, please look
that way in Cyprus!
.........Nina in Evening Gown in Cyprus

Far from elegant queen with a messy, not here-not there hairstyle perfectly matching her equally messy, score dropping gold evening gown! The imperfect  marriage of the wrong  hairstyle with the right girl wearing the wrong gown. Nina, why did you look that way in Cyprus?
