The Three Norns

_ _ _ _
Named after the three mysterious goddesses of
fate, this rune reading gives an overview of
the past, future, and present influences at
work in relation to a specific question. As
mentioned before, the Three Norns, or Three
Maidens, were sisters, two of whom wove the
fate of the world, and a third who, by the
end of the day, unraveled it.
The Norns possessed mysterious powers and
tended Yggdrasil (the World Tree), determining
fate. Fate is a key factor in Norse spirituality,
but instead of a helpless predestination, fate
meant a destiny created by earlier actions.
Traditionally, a Norn is present at each person's
birth to declare his/her fate. While this means
that one's fate is known at birth, remember that
it is constantly being unraveled! The Three Norns
layout works off the concept that each person's
fate is constantly being spun and unwound by the
hands of time. The Norns represent the perceived
order of time: past, future, and present. This
perceived order is a linear view that sees time
as separated into these three distinct areas: what
has happened, what will happen, and what is happening.
These separations are a way of discussing the dimension
of time, but they are not necessarily real. As with the
Celts, Native Americans, and Vedic culture, the Norse
spiritual tradition views time as being fluid and
flexible, thus defying "normal" separations. The runes
allow a person to move beyond past, future, and present,
to a place where time is fluid and all is One. In this
place, personal and divine information become more
accessible.
After following the basic beginning sequence,
slowly pull three runes, one at a time, from your
rune bag or three cards from the deck, placing them
in a horizontal row on your rune cloth. If the runes
are facedown, flip them over from right to left as
if turning the pages of a book.
Rune #1:
The first rune to the left corresponds to the
Norn Urd, representing what has been-all the
past actions and events that affect the question.
Rune #2:
The middle rune corresponds to the Norn Skuld.
Signifying the future and that which is to become,
the Skuld rune points to the likely outcome to your
question if you continue on your present path, or at
least one of the possible end results. In some
instances, the Skuld rune may signify the fate of
the questioner.
Rune #3:
The third rune corresponds to the Norn Verdandi
and that which is, as well as the path you, or the
person you're reading for, are currently on. It
reflects all those influences in the present that
relate directly to the question. The Verdandi rune
frequently points to a choice that needs to be made.
