This eight-rune reading represents the
Wheel of the Year, reflecting its eight
quarter and cross-quarter divisions
(the Sabbats), as well as the eight
directional Nordic divisions of space:
North, Northeast, East, Southeast, South,
Southwest, West, and Northwest. Each of
the eight spokes of the wheel is ruled
by a rune. When you do this rune spread,
the meaning of each rune you pull is
determined in relation to or in
combination with the rune that governs
that particular spoke or house. If a rune
falls into a house that is ruled by itself,
then its meaning is doubled, while if it
falls into a house whose rune means the
opposite, both are neutralized. Because of
this, the Eight-Spoked Runic Wheel is well
suited for questions with many related
parts.
Focusing on your question and mixing the
runes or rune cards as usual, draw the first
eight runes that come to you. Place them,
one by one, faceup on the casting cloth in a
sunwise (clockwise) pattern, starting at the
east, the point furthest to the right, as shown
in the layout above. The reason you begin here
is because the sun rises in the east. When you
interpret this reading, however, you begin at
the house that corresponds with your question,
moving in a sunwise direction around the wheel
until all of the runes are read. If, for instance,
your question concerns higher learning and knowledge,
you would begin in the west house of Kenaz. When
asking a question about polarities in your life
or sudden changes, you would start your reading
at the south point, the House of Dagaz. As with
any layout that utilizes rune combinations,
the Eight-Spoked Runic Wheel layout takes a little
more time than some of the other layouts as well
as a bit more thought.
