Using ten tunes, this layout represnts the
Tree of Life, which is the essence of
all trees, ever green, and continuously
blooming and bearing fruit. In the Northern
Tradition this great tree was usually guarded
by a serpent or dragon. A giant ash, Yggdrasil,
was the World Tree that links and shelters all
the worlds. Three roots in three different worlds
fed Yggdrasil-one in Nifelheim by the spring of
Hvergelmir "roaring kettle," which is the source
of many rivers; one in Midgard by Mimir's Well
(the Well of Wisdom); and one in Asgard, which is
watered daily by the Norns from Urd's Fountain
(the Well of Fate). Four stags representing the
Four Winds and named Dain, Dvalin, Duneyr, and
Durathor ran across the branches of the World Tree.
They fed on the topmost twigs as dew dripped from
their antlers onto the world below. Other inhabitants
of Yggdrasil included Vithofnir, the golden cock,
who watched Surt the fire giant; Ratotosk, the gossiping
squirrel; an eagle with the falcon Vedfolnir perched on
his head; and Odin's goat, named Heidrun, who supplied
the divine mead. On the day of Ragnarok, when the forces
of chaos would arise, Surt would set Yggdrasil on fire,
but a man and a woman would hide inside its trunk. They
would be the only humans to survive and would begin a
Golden Age.
Designed to give a concise overview of your life or that
of another person, this particular layout is more advanced
than the others, yet it brings quick, comprehensive, and
accurate results. The runes represent the roots, trunk,
branches, and top of the Tree of Life.
When doing this reading for yourself, focus your attention
on your life while you mix your runes. When doing the reading
for another person, focus your attention on that other person
while mixing your runes. When using rune cards, let the other
person mix the cards while focusing on his or her life, and
then hand them back to you, the reader. Pull ten runes, one
at a time, and place them facedown in a row in front of you.
Then, take each rune in the order you pulled it, turn it over,
and place it in the correct position, according to the layout
above.
Rune #1:
The rune at the top of the tree symbolizes your highest
ideals and standards of excellence.
Rune #2 and #3:
The second rune represents your current energy level, and
the third your physical and mental experiences. Read these
two runes as a pair.
Rune #4 and #5:
The fourth rune signifies your ethical virtues and personal
moral code, and the fifth shows the area of your most recent
victories and successes. Read these two runes individually
and then as a pair, in combination with each other.
Rune #6:
The sixth rune represents your health, and issues with health.
Rune #7 and #8:
The seventh rune denotes personal issues of love and trust,
and the eighth rune stands for creativity in the arts, crafts,
and procreation. Read these two runes, in combination, as a pair.
Rune #9:
The ninth rune points to your powers of imagination and creative
ideas.
Rune #10:
The bottom rune at the roots of the tree represents your living
conditions and the state of your hearth and home.
