The Loving Cup uses nine runes, and is
particularly useful for questions concerning
matters of the heart. Traditionally made of
clay, the cup is a universal symbol of water,
especially the waters of the sea womb, which
gave birth to the Earth and all that lives on
it. As a vessel symbolic of the womb and well
of knowledge, as well as of the magical
cauldron of the Great Goddess, the cup embodies
the essence of the mother. It depicts the source
of life and the well of inspiration from whose
watery depths all things spring. Once consecrated
through dedication, the cup becomes a loving cup,
representing the sacred union of the Goddess and
God.
Think of a question regarding love. Use this
layout only when asking a question in regard
to your beloved-not just someone you are
infatuated with, but someone for whom you feel
"deep love." Mix the runes as usual while
pondering the question. Pull nine runes, placing
them, faceup, in position as if you were
constructing a loving cup. Put the first rune
at the base of the cup, the second rune above
the first, the third above the second, and so
forth, according to the layout above. The top
two runes are read in combination, both
representing the future outcome. If one of the
top runes is positive and the other negative
(Othala, for example, and Thurisaz), they cancel
each other out.
Rune #1:
The first (bottom) rune represnts your current position.
Rune #2:
The second rune signifies your beloved's present position.
Rune #3:
The third rune denotes the nature of the issue at hand.
Rune #4:
The fourth rune shows your desire in relation to the question.
Rune #5:
The fifth rune reveals your beloved's desire.
Rune #6:
The sixth rune shows the possible obstacles and challenges
that can arise for you.
Rune #7:
The seventh rune stands for the possible obstacles and
challenges that your beloved may encounter.
Rune #8 and #9:
The two topmost runes represent the future outcome.
Read them in combination with each other.
