| 2004-05 Season in Review
The 2004-05 season started off on an extremely positive note for the RMC Paladins. Prior to the season opening RMC welcomed 11 new faces to the roster including Masters students Tyler Middlebrook and Jeff Todd from the U of T. Key rookies that were welcomed to RMC were Dion Lahoda from Kamloops, BC, Duaine Fetzner from Royston, BC, Roman Srutek from Kanata, On, Ian Miller from Hamilton On, and Luke Pierce from Merritt, BC. In addition to the new faces on the roster the Paladins welcomed back team captain Pat MacDonald who missed all of last season due to a knee injury and Louis Charland who missed all of last season due to post concussion syndrome. The preseason started off well for RMC as they defeated Ottawa 3-1, lost to McGill 3-2 in OT and they then played a couple of games against US Division III schools, Utica who they tied 4-4 and Manhattanville where they lost 6-3. On the positive preseason RMC enter league play. The first five games of the season saw RMC go into overtime against their opponents. Unfortunately RMC could only muster one win and 4 losses but the OUA awards one point for OT losses in league play. In that stretch RMC took UQTR, Brock, Lauirer, Guelph and York to OT and managed to beat York in OT. After a tough OT loss to UQTR RMC beat Concordia 3-2 and then lost to McGill 5-4. At this point RMC was tied for first in the Division with Queens with 8 points each. RMC then stumbled into the Christmas break with 6 straight losses. Over Christmas RMC kept off the ice and did not play any exhibition games in order to allow the players some time off. When the second half started RMC did not reverse their pre-Christmas trend as they dropped their opening game to Concordia on the road. From then on RMC played .500 hockey starting with a key 8-3 win over Ryerson and a 3-2 OT loss to the U of T. Included in this was a split of the season series against Queens. RMC won the opening game, which was also the Carr-Harris Cup 5-2 but dropped the second 3-2. RMC then picked up two key wins against Ryerson and the U of T going into the West Point Weekend. There were high hopes for the West Point game, but the NCAA officals would not let that happen as they lead a parade of RMC players to the penalty box which killed any momentum that RMC tried to establish. The end result of the game was a 6-1 loss much due to the assistance of Armys seventh man, the ref. The West Point game was broadcast live nationally in Canada on the NHL Network and in the US on College Sports Television as well as being broadcast live on the web. The next weekend RMC returned to league play securely in second place in the division and looking like a lock for a playoff spot. Things changed with two tough losses and a Queens win and a tie. The playoff berth came down to the final weekend and thanks to Ryerson getting their first victory of the season against Queens and RMC getting a point from an OT loss to the U of T, the Paladins secured a playoff spot. In the final game of the season, coach Kelly Nobes gave some key players some rest on the bench against Ryerson, but after falling behind 5-1 halfway through the game, Nobes wanting to go into the playoffs on a positive note, shortened the bench and RMC came back to win 7-6 in OT. The Ryerson game was again broadcast nationally on the NHL Network on a tape delay. The playoffs opened at home for a best of 3 series against #7 ranked UQTR. In front of a hugely supportive home crowd, RMC jumped out to a 2-0 lead but could not hold on as UQTR came back to win 5-2. In game 2 in Three Rivers, RMC again kept it close for over half the game but UQTR proved too deep and came out 5-1 winners. UQTR went on to play Western for the OUA Championship. RMC loses six players to graduation this season. Gone are, Jesse Bruni, Louis Charland, Jeff Todd, Tyler Middlebrook, Adrian Hartley and Jamie Routledge. Best of luck to those players in their future endeavors and best of luck to RMC next season. RMC PLACES 4 PLAYERS ON ALL STAR TEAMS The RMC Paladins placed 4 players on OUA All-Star teams that were announced on Wednesday, 2 players each on the second All-Star team and 2 players on the rookie All Star team. On the OUA East Division Second All-Star team are fourth year defenseman Brent Maurice who was the quarterback on the RMC power play and led the defensive corps. Limited to 14 games due to a serious ankle injury in the first weekend of the season, Maurice notched 6 goals and 11 assists for 17 points. Joining Maurice on the team at center is Tyler Middlebrook. Middlebrook was a Masters transfer student from the U of T and in his fifth and final year of eligibility. In 24 games Middlebrook had 13 goals, 28 assists for 41 points and was the leading scorer in the OUA. On the Rookie All-Star team were defenseman Ian Miller who had 1 goal and 5 assists. Miller was solid throughout the season and played in all key situations for head coach Kelly Nobes. Joining Miller is Right Winger Roman Srutek.
