McGill 4 RMC 1 stats Head Coach Kelly Nobes Alma Matter showed no mercy for the Paladins on Sunday afternoon as the McGill Redmen beat RMC 4-1 in Kingston. McGill is fighting for first in the Far East and the Paladins are battling for first in the Mid East. The loss coupled with a U of T win now paints a different picture in the OUA Mid East. Toronto is in first with 23 points 4 up on RMC who are 2 up on Queens. The teams head into a crucial final weekend as both RMC and Queen�s play the U of T and the lowly Ryerson Rams to determine the second and final playoff position for the Mid East Division as the Kingston clubs travel to Toronto next weekend. In an entertaing back and forth first period McGill outshot RMC 15-12 and left the first with a 1-0 lead after a late goal on a fortuitous break. McGill�s Shawn Shewchuck netted a goal at 17:15 to open the scoring. The second period saw much the same style of play as RMC was out shot 13-8 in the period. Luke Pierce notched the RMC goal 1:22 into the period to tie the game with assists from Nick Cregan and Tyler Middlebrook. McGill restored their one goal lead at 7:22. In the third both teams tightened up with the shots 9-8 in favour of McGill, but the visiting Redmen notched 2 goals to put the game away. McGill got insurance markers at 9:33 and a shorthanded marker to put the game away at 12:02. RMC was out shot 36-29 for the game and went 100% on the penalty kill and went 0 for on the power play giving up a short handed goal. RMC�s next games are Saturday 19 Feb at 7:30 pm at the University of Toronto and Sunday 20 Feb at 3:00 pm against the Ryerson Rams 12 Feb Ottawa 7 RMC 5 stats In a wild game after their disappointing loss RMC dropped a 7-5 decision to the Ottawa Gee Gee�s on Saturday afternoon. It was a wide open free flowing game, a big change from last weeks action down in West Point. The first period saw a total of 33 shots on net with Ottawa outshoting RMC 20-13 but the period ended with a 2-2 tie. RMC opened the scoring at 5:57 when Tyler McTavish banged home a rebound on the power play. Ottawa however came back with two goals at even strength at 6:37 and 12:11 to take a 2-1 lead. The Paladins fought themselves back into the game when Roman Srutek notched the tying goal at 18:27. The teams settled down a little bit in the second period however, combined with Fridays loss to Queen�s and being tied at 2 after the first, Ottawa came out storming as they outscored RMC 4-1 in the period to take a 6-3 lead. RMC had an early opportunity as they had a 5 on 3 advantage for two full minutes less than two minutes into the period but Ottawa was successful in killing it off and it gave them a bunch of momentum. Ottawa scored a power play goal at 7:19 and then two even strength goals at 9:49 and 12:58 to take a 5-2 lead. Nick Cregan pulled the Paladins to within 2 at 18:38 but unlike in the first RMC could not go into the dressing room with that goal as Ottaw scored 11 seconds later to reestablish their 3-goal lead. Head coach pulled starting goaltender Blair Robertson and rookie Mike Hughes took over goaltending duties in the third period. The Paladins stormed back in the third with two goals to close within one but they could not even the score. Brent Maurice sparked RMC by blowing a booming point shot past the Ottawa goalie just 47 seconds in the period to make it 6-4. Ottawa however regained their 3-goal cushion at 3:48. Team captain Pat MacDonald brought the Paladins back to within two with a power play goal at 6:02 but that is as close as RMC could get. The Paladins went 1 for 4 on the power play and killed 3 of 4 short-handed situations. RMC was led by Brent Maurice, Nick Cregan and Tyler McTavish who each notched a goal and two assits. With his assist Middlebrook now has 34 points on the season. With the loss and Queen�s victory RMC is now 3 points up on Queens in the race for second and remain 2 points back of the U of T who lost 5-2 to UQTR on Friday. All three teams have 3 games left. |
