RMC 3 York 2 OT     stats

T
he Reddie Wardome has come alive again as unfriendly confines for visiting teams.  In front of a crowd of 300 loud and boisterous ,fans including several ex-cadets, the Paladins defeated the defending OUA champions York Lions 3-2 in OT on Sunday afternoon.

RMC came out flying after a tough 5-4 loss the night before and with the support of the crowd behind them to dominate the opening 3 minutes of the game in the York zone.  Both teams skated hard and each had some good scoring opportunites.  RMC took the lead at the 3:50 mark when Louis Charland stole the puck from a York defenseman and walked in alone putting the puck through the five hole of the York goaltender for a 1-0 lead.  In the second half of the period both teams showed good speed and puck control with RMC controlling the majority of the play.

The second period saw a continuation of the fast paced action as the teams opened up trying to get a key goal.  RMC again took most of the play to the Lions and opened up a 2-0 lead on the power play.  Adrian Hartley snuck in from the point and punched in a rebound for his second goal on the season.  The Paladins survived a scare at the eight minute mark as they killed off back to back penalties including 15 seconds of 5 on 3 play.  RMC continued to pressure York and frustrate them into undisciplined play.

In the third York came out much more aggressive and took the play to RMC.  York even up the game with 2 goals in 2:30 in the middle of the frame.  Blair Robertson continued his strong play with a game saving save on a York short handed breakaway.  RMC continued to mount pressure for the winning goal but could not get a break.

With the game tied at the end of 60 minutes the game went in to overtime.  The two teams traded scoring opportunities with end to end action.  The game looked to end in a tie however with 5.7 seconds left Tyler Middlebrook picked up a loose puck at the redline and broke in on a 2 on 0 along the boards and fired a shot into the topshelf with 1.8 seconds to go in overtime.  RMC was 1 for 5 on the powerplay while they killed off all 5 short handed situations.

Tyler Middlebrook led RMC with a goal and an assist to give him 5 points on the season and Louis Charland added to his point total with a goal.

The win gives RMC 3 out of a possible 4 points in their opening weekend.  York, who were ranked 6th in the nation heading into the weekend, leave Kingston with only 1 point after their loss the night before against Queens.23 Oct

Brock 5 RMC 4 OT   stats   Brock University Press Relase

The Paladins suffered a disappointing loss in their home and season opener on Saturday afternoon against the Brock Badgers.  In a game where RMC dominated much of the play some defensive miscues led to 4 Brock goals.  RMC dominated the first 10 minutes of the game however they could not cash in on the opportunities.

Brock opened the game at the 10-minute mark on the power play after Nick Cregan was called for tripping. A hard point shot beat Blair Robertson high on the glove side for a 1-0 Brock lead.  RMC later tied it up in the first on power play goal from Roman Srutek.  The period ended 1-1.

In the second RMC had a letdown as Brock scored three goals in a 3 minute span in the period.  On the first goal, the puck was stripped from Louis Charland leading to a two on one where Robertson did not have a chance.  Robertson did not have any support on the other two goals as one was a result of a long clearing pass that avoided the RMC defenseman on the boards and on the fourth Brock goal, Duaine Fetzner lost control of the puck in front of Robertson and inadvertently kicked the puck in.  RMC did however bounce back with 2 goals in the last 10 minutes from Adrain Hartley and Dion Lahoda. The second period was a penalty filled affair with numerous minors and 10-minute misconducts called.

RMC started out the third on a power play and was looking to gain some momentum but that did not last long as 56 seconds into the third Dion Lahoda was called for checking from behind and issued a 5 minute major and a game misconduct.  With less then a minute to go RMC was trailing 4-3 with the puck in their own end.  On the rush up the ice Blair Robertson was pulled for the extra attacker who joined the rush.  As the puck was dumped in towards the Brock goal there was a mad scramble around the goalmouth and Tyler Middlebrook poked the loose puck in to tie the game with 20.7 seconds left.

In the overtime the Paladins could not clear their zone and forced a face-off to the right of Robertson.  Brock won the face-off back to the point and scored 54 seconds into the OT period.

RMC had numerous chances to score but were stymied by the Brock netminder who at times looked shakey but made some key saves on some glorious RMC opportunities.  Tyler Middlebrook led the Paladins in scoring with a goal and two assists while Roman Srutek had a goal and assist.  RMC was 1 for 5 on the power play and killed 4 of 5 short handed situations including a 4 minute penalty and Lahoda's 5-minute major in the third.
