Subject: tepeyac venue/possible pix
To the on-line UBSHS batch ’73 – Hello, people,  fellow  science hi netizens.
Tomas  caught  me in quite a  guffaw  there in one of the pictures he uploaded.  Yup,  definitely  we had a good time, as you can see.
And  the imagery  that  he  brought in the post  was really vivid, almost graphic  and describes  exactly what happened that long week-end.
Which  bring me to what  I wanted  to  say;  that  I really enjoyed  absorbing all of these scenes – rain pouring  down in sheets, large  puddles, foggy  scenery amidst tall pines and  almost deserted streets, overflowing Burnham lake.  It is  another side of Baguio that speaks and in a way highlights the  hardiness of  its people and  how they have risen   above various  trials.   This, in a way must have made me stay on  in this job for over 20 years chronicling  the changing of the  seasons and  little victories… even  if  the pay  was barely enough to make ends meet.  Now  the kids have grown  and consequently their needs have grown so  much, I  have to look for  other  endeavors --  but that is another  story.
PITSTOP
This is going to  be  a really long one  so  I suggest you  go to the  john first  and if you have the  chance, get  a beer, a glass  of  wine  or a cup of your  brew  then  sit back and flit through  this posting
LET  ME  TELL  you also that I  have been trying  to  upload  five photos lunch time and  later afternoon yesterday to no avail.  I could not attach these also.  If  I could not imbed them  with  this  posting,  you would have to  content yourselves with the write-up  then the pics will follow when the rains stop and the  connection  is better.
The  report of Tomas also humbled  me  because even while we were having a good  time, the  guy was taking notes  mentally. Efficient, ha… That makes  him a perfect  C-man – no, no, not  a casino   but a  Committee  man – someone who knows what  to  do  given a certain task – who can  document  and more importantly point  to  a direction and rally  to  action.
Taking the cue,  one consensus arrived  at  in the  past  and moreso highlighted  in the  last  meeting is that  we have to settle the  venue,  so here goes -----
Dinah must have had  the best suggestion so  far that we hold the reunion at Hotel  Tepeyac.  When  we went around with Vivs and Arnel, we were  pressed for  time so missed this, we thought their garden was cramped. I  revisited the  place and I  am  endorsing Dinah’s  suggestion.  I am attaching  photos  so  you would  know the reason I am endorsing  her suggestion.
Tepeyac  is  one of the  small  hotels  located at 117  Leonard Wood Road about  two blocks up  the Brookside  Bridge  past  the road entrance to Teacher’s Camp.  It is located atop a  hill on the right going  up  to  the Botanical Garden  and on a knoll  opposite  the hotel building is the bonfire area/chapel site --  secluded  and rather private -- which  fits  in  with  the criteria earlier  set by the selection  group.
PHOTO  CAPTIONS
The  photo “tepeyachapel” shows  the inside  of  the chapel which  can  sit possibly over  30  people  and right  at  the back of the Chapel building is the  bonfire area.
The  photo “tepe-bonfire”  shows the  expanse of the  area  where we could have the program. It is surrounded by trees, big and small, mostly pine with some alnus  and others  (checks with criteria).  The big  clump of  dirt/debris in the  middle  is  actually  a bonfire  pit which  will be made  available after  the rains. The  rotting picnic table  will be disposed of and new  picnic  tables  will be in place come December.  There is a  small playground on the fringe  of  the flat area (where I’m standing at) and a terrace  below  to  my  left  in the  picture are  some  improvements  --  a garden and  some huts or sheds  which could still be at our disposal if we book the area
The  photo “chapel view”  is  what  you can see  standing  about three or four paces  from the  chapel  door.   (If successfull, the fotos are embedded between this  and the next paragraph)
The “driveway” photo  is  the view from the  driveway  going down to the  hotel’s parking lot  and front  desk.
The “foyer”  photo is the  entrance  to the receiving  and front desk area
INITIAL  ARRANGEMENTS
In conference with the  Manager, Armando  Estrellanes (no  relation to Navy Capt. s. g. Antonio Trillanes),  he  said  there are  no  charges for  using  the Chapel  and the  Picnic  grounds provided we book even as a  live-out  seminar package. One  limitation  is  that  they have to be the one  to cater. Please check out the  live-out  seminar packages -- A - P280,  B-480 and  C-565 per  person  per day which includes a.m. snack, lunch and  p.m. snack. We can have add-on foods  only  if  they  do not carry the  item  on their  menu, otherwise  we would have to pay charges  for food and  corkage for  drinks.
Note also in the attached Hotel  data  package that we can avail of the  Cultural  Presentation  which is  a 20 to 30 minute presentation we do not  have to worryabout gong-beaters and those  who like to dance along can  do  so with no worries. Performers, I was  told, are students who come from the local universities.
If we  plan to have a  mass, we have to contact  the parish priest at St. Joseph Church  at Pacdal   as they   belong to this  parish  and there  are  turf arrangements,  so it seems,  if  we  contact an outsider priest (we never  had on  in  out batch unless   Julio G.  proceeded with his plan then)
I  have asked  the manager to  book the  place for  the evening  of  the 26th , the  whole day of the  27th and  half-day  until after  lunch of the  28th of December. The manager  can only assure temporary  booking  subject to confirmation --  which is  payment of  an  advance good for  a minimum  of  10 persons live-out booking.
Friends, details  can be ironed out  during  the September 19 meeting.   May I suggest  a Food and  Beverage committee  to  coordinate with an Accommodations committee to finalize arrangements.  It  would be nice  also  if  we could  have  a definite number as to who  or  how many  are coming.   Count me  in  already.
I heard  the first  Christmas Carol  on  September 1, our  neighbor  put up their  Christmas lights yesterday  and today  I received my first  greeting of have a Blessed Christmas from  doc Bren Cawis-Bandaay. Fantastic, di  ba?
Honestly,  medyo naka-panic na yata itoh, we have to  move  a bit faster para we can  reserve the  place.  (or would  you like  to move this to April  next  year? Ma Anne Gammad-Feliciano, for one,   would be very happy.)
BTW, how about a  wild idea;  no  group___ ,  Tom, not that wild but…! this is for  you, Buddy, Arthur and  all the computer savvy  techies of the class ---  How about a WEBCAST  of  some portions of the  reunion?   Or  perhaps creating a  Chat  Channel with video cam possibilities  so some could chat live with other classmates or web netizens while the reunion is going  on?
In this  way MaAnne and  the others  who could  not come  can still have a glimpse through  the webcast or chat ala  videophone  with  any of the  class members or other science highers  on D-day? Perhaps  you   have  to  group yourselves into a  committee also to see  if  this  can be done.  Tepeyac has  active e-mail account which  could  facilitate  matters or we could bring  in  a professional like Bitstop  or  something for  the set up which would cost  us  something.
Wild, di ba?  Pero… baka  puede,  eh? ‘no  sa palagay n’yo,  comrades  and  fellow  Bolsheviks  of  batch 73?
Signing off  muna  ako ----- nathan

thanks a lot for your update specially the one on tepeyac. it sure sounds like a great place for us to have our reunion.
yahoo has disallowed file attachments that go along with postings. instead, if you want to upload photos, u can do it in our photo section just like tom did.
i have requested that the sept 19th meeting be reset for the 17th kasi our grand opening will be on the 20th and i dont think i can make it on that day.
thanks a lot for your understanding, guys.

Hello buddy, nathan, and all my classmates from--would you believe--30 years ago!
It's amazing how fast developments on the reunion have already taken shape since Lettie, Dinah, Arlene, and Vivien were able to get in touch with me for the first time (and really really surprised me ) last August. We're down (or should I say we're UP) to 187 messages na pala and a lot of pictures, even from across the globe!
my very last encounter with anyone from class of 73 was with Fake, (or Feyk? whom I heard is now a gentleman haciendero farmer in Samar) who was my co-graduate from Chemical Engineering at SLU in 1978. Since then, talagang absolutely no news or contact ako with anyone from class of 73. It's really quite a different experience being able to communicate (from out of the blue) with dear persons from one's teen-age past!
I live with my husband and three kids at East Fairview, Quezon City. After a long stint as an executive in a male-dominated telephone company, Digital Telecommunications Phils. Inc., I resigned my position as Area Manager for Region III last year to concentrate on our own IT outsourcing company affiliated with my husband's uncle's firm in New York. I now hold office in the Ortigas area, while simultaneously also tending to our cable television business in Bataan.
I have not even finished going through all the messages and pictures yet. I hope to be able to get to know a lot about our friends too!
Warm regards,
Nelda (Cruz-Zulueta)

Tomas, Please help me with this.
I could not upload the picx using the upload tool in our web page. I reduced the quality so that it can be accomodated and not nut use up a lot of space; the originals were really big and really nice digital photos courtesy of a media friend.
Please take charge and post these in our page as decision-making tool for your meeting come the 17th as re-set by Buddy.
Tell El Presidente also that I will text MonLee to ask if he has opened his e-mails.
I do hope

buddy,
I tried 2 hours Thursday, whole afternoon Friday and one hour Sunday to send the pics -- as attachment, as embedded using upload tool and the click-n-browse option in our web page -- no success.
Monday morning, I asked advice and reduced the quality of the pics and tried again in our web page -- still no way, bro.
That's when I opened my hotmail account and attached the photos and sent it to Tom and to myself in the yahoo account. PUMASOK! I think that made it easier to send you the photos. I just wanted to make sure that at least two of you got it.
When I saw if on our web page, ahh, nakahinga na ako... and that is the saga of trying to upload fo2s of a posibel site for the December to remember reunion of UBSHS '73.
Cheers on your meeting, can't come down; take charge na kayo.

Subject: Wednesday, Sep. 17, 2003 dinner meeting
Guys, looks like I'll be begging off from the planned Wednesday meet. Again!
Really getting to be a habit, this inability to attend scheduled meetings. Anyway, I've already called up Let, Howie and Bud—also tried Nates and Arnel but couldn't get through—to say sorry mga pards, seems I won't be able to come to the Sept. 17 get-together in Manila. To think I myself called for this meeting during the last mini-reunion in Baguio!
I've been ordered by my CEO/directors to attend the 3-day Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas which starts next Tuesday. Short notice really, because there's a lot of planning, packing and preparations involved. Not to mention tidying up scores of pending departmental work that musn't be left hanging in my absence. Told my bosses that to make it worth my while, they'll have to include a 10-day tour of casino properties in Nevada and Reno to go along with the convention. Know what? They agreed. Hope it's gonna be a real vacation and not involve work as I go around meeting casino bosses there. Anyway, I think I can squeeze in a few days in California, para ma-ipasyal naman ang mag-ina ko sa LA, San Diego and Sanfo—perhaps I can visit Manny and Henry and Josie while there. Can anyone post their numbers please? We're flying out Tuesday morning and be back on the 29th, provided Malacanang clears my papers by tomorrow.
Managed to convince Neng and KC (that's my wifey and daughter respectively) to come along only after a wrenching, tearful argument with the kid because she didn't want to leave school in the middle of the race, graduating pa mandin siya. (She's 15 and a senior at the UST High School.) Told her it's part of her education too, this travel business, and in fact she can actually get to learn more by going to far-flung places, seeing sights and meeting people than sitting cooped up in the classroom or lab. Yesterday I accompanied her to Ateneo to take the entrance exam (she'd done UP already, hope she makes it in both when the results come out) and we had an argument again—actually a reiteration (because I've stopped fighting back) of her grievance that her parents (us) are taking her away from the chance of getting higher grades. I told her sorry, it's for her own good, we couldn't stand to leave her behind while we were out there enjoying, blah-blah; finally able to appease her once more with the promise of goodies. Teen daughters! They'll be the end of us.
Ever-enterprising Nathan has investigated HOTEL TEPEYAC (177 Leonard Wood Road, Baguio City, Phone 074-442-3956) and sent pictures of the place. I have posted these in the PHOTOS section of our Yahoo! Groups website—go on, take a peek at them. Looks good. He also talked with a Mr. ARMANDO E. ESTRELLANES of Tepeyac about their seminar/group packages, as follows:
LIVE-IN SEMINAR/GROUP PACKAGES (if participants check in): Quadruple Sharing P680.00 per head per day; Triple Sharing P845.00 per head per day; Twin Sharing P965.00 per head per day; Single Occupancy P1,450.00 per head per day.
These packages include Room Accommodation, Three Meals (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner), Two Snacks (Morning and Afternoon) *Lunch and Dinner served BUFFET STYLE (Combination of Soup, Meat, or Fish, Vegetable, Rice, Dessert and Drinks), Free Flowing Coffee (Choice of Brewed or Instant), Use of Conference Hall with Overhead Projector and Screen, Whiteboard, Sound System, Television and VHS player), Welcome Streamer, Cultural Presentation in a Bonfire Setting (20–30 minute presentation)
LIVE-OUT SEMINAR PACKAGES (this is more applicable to us): Package A, P 280.00 per head, consisting of AM Snack, Lunch and PM Snack 1 day; Package B, P480.00 per head, consisting of AM Snack, Lunch and PM Snack and Dinner; Package C, P565.00 per head, Consisting of Breakfast, AM Snack, Lunch, PM Snack and Dinner.
These packages include Free Flowing Coffee, Use of Conference Hall with Overhead Projector and Screen, Whiteboard, Sound System, Television and VHS Player, Welcome Streamer.
(Nates, `la bang free-flowing booze? He-he.)
So there you are. I guess what needs to be settled in the Wednesday Manila meeting will be how many are really joining the reunion (companions included) so we can raise the amount needed for the downpayment to Tepeyac (how much is this Nates?) and they can book us to make the necessary preparations for our December affair. Let us know what you decide on so that this early we can have the funds flowing in na for the working committee in Baguio to process our needs. Classmates from US, Europe and elsewhere, brace yourself for the budget statement and prepare your checkbooks!
Good luck in your meeting then, Bud, Let, Arnel, Bren and the rest who can attend. Keep me posted about where and when you're dining. There's still a chance I won't be flying off as planned if a problem develops with our clearance papers. In that event, I might be able to join you after all!
Bud, good luck also in your golf course's grand opening. I've no doubt you'll come out swinging (joke, he-he).
Hi again, Rainelda, good to have you joining us! With God's permission, we might become neighbors in QC when we move in to our new home in Fil-Heights next year.
Howie, hope your convention at the Pan Pacific turned out well. Did you know I work just a few block away from there? If I'd known I would have walked in on you for lunch.
(Arnel, any further developments about the sad news you texted me?)

Kakadwa;
I just got this and  I think its  good  for a couple  of  laughs. It is a little bit  green though not offensive -- laughable  is  what  it is,  something to break the dead air,  so  to speak.
Note: forwarded message attached.
Moral  lesson -- when you  pass  air,  stay away from flammables.

Subject: Global Gaming Expo
Hey guys, am at the Cyber Cafe section of the Exhibition Floor of the Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas right now writing this post. We arrived just yesterday afternoon and still adjusting to the new time zone. It's still a little warm here, the air hot and dry outside, summer's just over and fall is setting in.
Lots of people in Las Vegas this time of year, lots of fairs and conventions as well. Neng and KC are on their own, I think exploring the hotels around the Bellagio.
Did you know in Vegas there are no tourist attractions other than the hotels? That's what people come here for, to see the shows and sights put up by the hotels and to gamble of course. You should see the lights at night.
I might get a chance to do some wagering myself tonight, after we see a magic show at Harrah's. We would have liked to see Celine Dion at the Mirage but tickets are sold out three months in advance! Sayang.
Anyway, just a quick post to say hello, I wonder what happened with the meeting Wednesday evening by Buddy and the rest of Team Manila. Looking forward to their post.
Cheers to everyone, ano ang bilin ninyo? We hope to be back by the end of September.

Hi Tom,
How entertaining naman your posts! I just love the blow-by-blow accounts of what's up in your life. I couldn't help but react to your insights on Las Vegas--just been there myself, and it's very interesting--100% man-made! I like the way they painted the ceilings of the hotels to turn them into blue skies, taking the outdoors in.
Buddy, Nathan, Arnel.. your messages too are so rich in content--what a joy to read. Maane you look so glamorous in your pictures! Hi Dinah! Hope to hear from you again. Art, how nice to learn that you and Suzette made it through! Hello Howie--kamusta ka na?
Regards to everyone..so nice to keep in touch!
