Subject: R-Day Diary
For all the persons in th E-Group,
I've been observing the postings in our e-group and the web
page and people have been very conservative and sparing the
past days; I wonder why… J

YO, GUYS, WHATZUP! It's either the people are bz, bZ, BZ or
are they just lay Z? Its more of the former, perhaps, and I
hope not the latter…J

It is also amazing why those who joined the reunion are
very unusually silent. I think that these people have a very
strong hangover, remembering, reminiscing and savoring the R-day
December 26-27, 2003.

It seems we are holding it close to our chests, trying to
digest it, assessing it and then trying to chose the best
part for sharing. But there are no best parts really; it seems
all parts – the waiting, the jokes, the pictures brought, even
the time sitting around together just communing – are moments
that mean so much to us.

For MaAnne's and Angies sake and for others who will log on
later, allow me to reconstruct some snippets in this
Bolsheviks R-Day Diary.

DAY 1 – December 26 (coincidentally, this also the anniversary day
when the CPP was found.)

4:30 Vivienne is first on the scene. I came in next to see
if there are still to-do's on some things and also because
Art, Suzanne and family arrived earlier (around 1:30 p.m.) and
they were supposed to check out the holding room we booked
earlier for their driver to sleep on.

5:00 Next comes Arnel who placed up the poster for the R-day followed
by Letty who had a bagful of goody giveaways for the faculty.
Then it was Evelyn, Brenda and Miguel "Fake" who came next
texting earlier asking what time I was going to Tepeyac. (We
actually had a preview because Fake and wife Luz (?) and
their `tres marias' came to the house the night before where
we had a long lounging talk over chips, sliced apples, choc
cake and hot choc.) Buddy was still in La Union while Tomas was
still trying to weave in and out through the thick holiday traffic
in Urdaneta.

6:40 I left for a spell and found Arlene L. Arlene S.,
and Dinah on site. Art and Suzzane and their three children
arrived earlier. Jessie came later on behalf of Joy who
said she was not feeling well and would rather join the day
affair and forego the cocktails and bonfire. We had gongs but
no one seemed to know how to play them. I got one and
gave it to Karlo (Art's first born, at 20 years old), I
taught him the first beat and he caught on to it. While
he picked on the rhythm, I played the contrapuntal beat and
we had it going for more than 10 minutes or so.

7:40 Pio and wife Malen arrived. Having grown so toweringly
tall, the girls had a ball asking him to identify who they
were. By then, the fire had been lit and because the hotel
boys used pine needles as kindling, smoke was all over the
place but it was not as irking because it still had that
pine scent. Graciela (Art's last girl) got into the
groove and was chasing ashes and "lighted thingies" (alipato
ang tawag sa Filipino) falling all over. "U better have that
cold beer ready when I arrive," Tom was texting. Finger foods
are served and the favorite is spicy hot "sisig."

9:00 It must have been around this time when Buddy and wife
Grace arrived, we were seated in monobloc plastic chairs
around the fire. He was already hugging Arlene S. talking and
saying "apay daytoy kaarubak nga taga-Q.M., isu pay ti han
makabigbig kaniak." What was her response? "Talaga nga han
ka mabigbig, apay sinuka nga talaga?" Must have been the
anesthesia from birthing or it must have been that the image
in her mind was stuck to 30 years ago such that when
Buddy showed up with a shiny overgrown forehead, Arlene could
not connect it with the curly topped dashing high schooler
that "el Presidente" was.

10:00 A bottle of red is served and Buddy brings out another
one. Tom finally makes it. Ramon calls in from Lepanto in
Mankayan, Benguet (some four hours northward) and talks with
me and five other classmates. He promises to come by the
morrow. "Di sabi ni Howard nag-oopera?" Arnel asks, "… at
saka di ba darating din si Nelda? Wala naman akong sinasabi
pero kung sabay pa silang darating eh… ewan ko na!" This
elicited giggles and some laughter but by about the third
time Arnel was saying it, who else arrives with two bottles
of sparkling orange spirits but … Nelda and Howard which
brings the house down with hoots, catcalls and more good
natured laughter.

Twas around 11:00 p.m. when the group sat down to talk about
Emmet and also to discuss about our project with El
Presidente presiding. Dues were pledged out of what each
could give freely and willingly with Evie talking note. We
planned for a mass lining up songs to sing only to be
abandoned because as the voluntary guitar man, I could not join
as I had a wedding to attend in La Trinidad.

After two more rounds of beer, we broke up past midnight and
because I was the last to leave and I could not find the key
to the office car I borrowed, I had to leave it and took a
cab. The waiters found the key, though, and Arnel handed it
back to me at lunch the next day.

Art and Suzanne decided to sleep in the holding room which
was supposed to be for their driver. It was beneath ground
level and as I suspected, Art said it was a bit musty and
the air was stale --- sorry, Man.

DAY 2

9:00 –12:30 This was supposed to start with a mass which
they said was a nice one courtesy of Fr. Julio Barbieto, a
former parish priest in at the UP Los Baños in Laguna so he
was familiar with Letty, Arlene L. Tomas and myself.

Joy and Ruben must have joined during the mass. Being
unstructured, after the mass were reminiscences by each class
member, tracing the past and how we got to where we are
now. Arnel, Tom, Evie and the rest had better fill up on
this because I was out.

Aside from Emmet, among the faculty were the former Ms. Daus
and Ms. Bautista; Mr. Estoque arrived after lunch.

2:30 For the afternoon session, there was a meeting after
Emmet's and the faculty speeches. This was to discuss about
possible projects and changes in the Science High or
something because it had become elitist or what not.
Arnel, Tom, and Dinah perhaps -- you have to fill in on this one
because I left to bring Fr. Barbieto back to his rectory
along with Evie. Then I had to bring my wife, Jolyna and
our three kids, Neng (Tom's wife) and their daughter Karla
Circe and Luz (Fake's wife) and two of their kids back to town
for shopping to use the gift certificates given by Tom.

It was here that I got feedback -- Ang galing daw ni
Emmet, nakakaiyak daw yung mga sinasabi, and Neng said
nakakasayang daw at hindi rin siya nakapag-aral sa UB Science
High. They also noticed that clean living daw tayong lahat
dahil walang nagsisigarilyo kaya lang umi-inom pa rin. (Take
note, Angie, walang nagsisigarilyo sa 19 classmates mo who
were in the R-Day)

3:00 Poor Ramon, still had to attend to somethings for the
company and was let off only 11:00 so he whizzed through
the dreadful Halsema Highway (which is still called Mountain
Trail, ask Letty who's from Sabangan, MP) making it to
Tepeyac past 3:00 in the afternoon.

The rest of the day was spent luxuriating in each other's
presence.

- Arlene L. brought out her small album
- Vivs brought a small box of photos and her slum
book.
- Art brought in an 18-year old bottle of Scotch
whisky. Suzanne took me aside thanking me for spending time
with Karlo on the gongs. Sayang, I thought, if there were more
we could actually have had a good "pattong" session but the
hotel was not able to book their dancers.
- WE also wondered about our children's names -- my
first born is Jan Karlo, Art's first born is also Karlo while
Tom's only child is Karla. In the book of names, this is
supposed to connote Free man. Such co-incidence but remember the
Fremen of Dune, Tom?
- As dusk settled, we tried some
songs, "Gaudiamus," "Nacio nacio pastores" etc. Sumabog lang
sa Alleluia chorus even with Emmet conducting.
- Ramon and I hit the gongs a bit with Fake trying to
keep the beat.
- Then we had a healing and uniting prayer led by Evie.
(makatindig balahibo talaga!)
- There were some take home from the overspill of the
food which many of us partook of
- Fake and family were supposed to sleep over but the
hotel already booked the room for another guest even as
Evie had already paid for it for the night. I do hope Evie
and Vivienne could collect on this double billing.
- After supper, the group gathered at the fire as that
day was one of the coldest. There were more songs, jokes and
quips like inside the belt of Ireneo Amogan was written in
Pentel "Evelyn Forever" or something. (tama ba itong
sinasalawasaw ko dito?)
- Here is a quote over the bonfire "Sampalin mo na ako,
huwag mo lang akong tawaging virgin!" (Guess who said it?)

Anyway, the day after the reunion, I was home and minding our
store and I had this aching in my chest. It was not
painful naman, it was a pleasant ache; medyo nakakaiyak na
parang may kulang ba -- parang bitin yung reunion. This is
the hang-over I was referring to which must have been felt by
the others, though I did not have a way of knowing then.

It was a Sunday and the the first to text was Arlene L. and
Evie who said we should do it again and Tomas who sent kudos
for the Baguio group. Then I sent Godspeed messages to Art,
Fake and Tom (I think).

It was weird, this hangover feeling. I had to do something and
I found myself humming and recalling "… My seed is sown now
….. my flesh is bone now, my back is bowed…. so hurry
sundown, be on your way …. Take the old day (way?) wrap
it in new dreams, Send It My Way!

It was as if I was drawing strength from this song of
our youth which I did not appreciate much then but means
so much now! DINAH, if you are reading this, paki-post mo
naman yung buong lyrics ng song na toh, please?

Di lang pala ako ang may hangover, becoz when I texted
Arnel a week after ganoon din daw pala ang feeling niya --
na ang lakas daw ng hangover and that let us not wait for
30 years to meet again, txt niya.

And so, pasiencia na lang for this hopeless, sentimental, romantic
posting -- took me a whole day to compose it…. forgive me, friends
for this very long message as I really just had to get it off my
system. Ngayon, makakabalik na siguro ako sa trabaho ko.

God Bless You all, my fellows, and it should be a comfort that we
could plan for another reunion when Mary Anne comes for a
visit this summer. And possibly with Angie along, we could have
another grand time together again. Wishing all the best of the New
Year ahead of us. Nathan

hello again everyone and all!!

what a great reunion that was!! im sure that we are getting back to
work and the daily life we all have live and the memories of those
times will refill and restore the spirit of class '73 in all of us.

i hope that the winds that that has brought us together don't stop
with the reunion. we should continue to be in touch and share the
joys of growing older and keeping our wonderful memories alive.

i think the most important thing we should come up with now is a
project that will keep us together. something which will help others,
something which will be our way of giving back the blessings which we
have received.

i hope that arnel and the guys up in baguio can help us with this. we
had a few suggestions like having a professorial chair for the
faculty of the science high and also the intercom system. can u
please keep us up to date here? im sure there are a lot of us who are
willing to share just a bit and it seems that a little goes a long
way in our alma mater.

also, can we have the pics posted on the site?? whoever has any of
the pics taken during the reunion please upload to the site. if u
dont know how to upload, get in touch with tom or nathan.

until next time, everybody take care!!!

Hello Everyone,
You bet I didn't know how and what to feel after we left on the last night of the reunion.I could only text Letty, Evie and Arnel to say I was on the bus going back home to Dau.I was happy I had been able to attend and hoping I will again be present on the proposed reunion this summer when Maan and Angie will come home.
Nates --- I will try to remember the whole song . So here goes :
My seed is sown now,
my field is plowed.
My flesh is bone now,
my back is bowed.
(Chorus)
So hurry sundown, be on your way..
And hurry me a sun up from this beat up sundown day.
Hurry down sundown, Be on your way...
With me tomorrow... out of today.
Tomorrow's breeze now, blows clear and bright.
I'm off my knees now, I'm standing proud
( Repeat chorus)
----------------------------------------
If anyone else remembers how it goes or lyrics I missed please add on... I am glad I have so many brothers who were also UBScience High grads. We still sing songs and remember how it was when we had the real Cantata. And maybe as Emmet had made it clearer to all of us  the real meaning of the Fourth King.....
Let's have a project so we can meet again like Buddy said.
PS...... I have a new celfone number .....please delete the old one.
It's ----   +63927-371-9178.

Dinah et al,
Thanks!  I like  that  part  -- I'm  off my knees now I'm  standing proud--  nice line, ha.
That somehow  fills in some of  the gaps  but there are still  some  gaps  and there is still more like I  think there  there is a  coda/ending paragraph  of the song that goes like  so:
Hurry  down sundown, get  thee, be gone
I'm off (to  the start now...?)   of  the new  dawn
Hurry  down  sundown,  take  the old day
Wrap in new dreams,  send  it  my way.
That somehow  lifts me up, you know,  from  what  I'm facing  now.  It's like  some sort of  a prayer, too, if you don't  mind my saying.
Okay,  so where  are the other  people? Post naman  kayo!
I have texted  Arnel and  Tom who said  they will be posting (Tom with photos)  Evie, Dinah and El Presidente have ticked in after the R-DAY. Those  who are on-line, share naman kayoh! Did  you blood pressure shoot  up  after R-Day?  How's your cholesterol or uric acid  levels? Were there inches  added to your waistlines?
Art, how was your return trip?  Doc Bren, Letty, Vivs, Arlene F., Doc Howie  AND Nelda, Bens and all of you girls and boys.  (wahahahaha)
Oh,  I forgot that in the afternoon of the second day  while were gathered at the  table,  Beth  Frondoso  called  in  through Letty's  fone   and also talked with Dinah   and me but  I think yo could guess  who  she was looking  for ....   di ba?
Anyway,  let's try  to  complete  this  song nga, please lang?
Sige,  my  dear  friends,  till  we  meet  again.
I. My seed is sown now, my field is plowed.
My flesh is bone now, my back is bowed.
(Chorus)
So hurry sundown, be on your way..
And hurry me a sun up from this beat up sundown day.
Hurry down sundown, Be on your way...
With me tomorrow... out of today.  (I think this should  read  Weave or   Bring me tomorrow... out  of  today,)
II.  Tomorrow's breeze now, blows clear and bright.
I'm off my knees now, I'm standing proud
( Repeat chorus)

Subject: WAHAPEN?
Yo, PEOPLE --
Aside from El Presidente and Dinah, no hay postings en la yahoo group ... nada ... no one is reading? no one wants to post? por que?
Through texting, Tom threatened to post with pictures (if only to prolong that warm feeling of the R-Day, he txd) and I hope its forthcoming. Vivienne said she felt more nostalgic after reading my post. Arnel said it was a tough act to follow daw yung sa akin to which I said I just had to pour it out and unloaded what was inside so I can get back to work.
I read somewhere kasi that that's how writers/newsmen do it daw kasi -- open a vein and let your heart flow.
Kaya lang, bakit? san na kayo? whereruguys. Okay so was my posting full of Zea maize, that is, was I corny? Overacting ba ako, wearing my heart on my sleeve, masyadong ma -emosyon? Did I offend anyone? Nelda? Howard? Lettie?
Anyway, lately I found my self humming to the tune of "Et in terra pax hominibus" and remembering snatches of "... Domine Deus ... Rex Coelestis... Deus pater omnipotens."
That Emmet knew what he was doing, don't you think so? He was planting the seeds of Godlinesss, the good and human conscience, etc.
Could you imagine if this were not so? Would Buddy have defied Macoy? Siguro naging ruthless torturer siya and then running for president like Lacson now.
Si Tomas, Fake at ako, baka nasa Central Committee na siguro kami or waiting for negotiations in Netherlands. Our engineers and architects would be building structures that collapse or fail intermitently so they can collect more moolah. Our doctors would be facing malpractice suits for extracting livers and selling then for transplants. Etc. etc.
But all of this did not happen, by God's grace and with the help of Emmet and our camaraderie as a class.
So like Arnel had said, let us remember the Fourth king and give up our swords ... Peace to you all, Bolsheviks...
and a Happy KUNG HEI FAT CHOI! (May we all have fat wallets!)
Cordial and warmest regards.
Nathan

Subject: I was in a shipwreck and got stranded in a deserted island...
Yo, Nates!
Read the above subject and know it isn't true.
And yes, don't worry, we got to read your post-reunion diary and were touched by your moving account of our December happening. So moved in fact that I am unable to make a counter-post, he-he.
But hey, yup, apologies are in order. Really sorry for neglecting posting on our live journal for a spell, sorry for not finding time to nurture our website.
Got a lot of excuses here ready to pop out, including the shipwreck and being stranded on a deserted island (ala Tom Hanks in that unmemorable movie), but there really is no point in making such noises right now.
So, sorry again! Don't worry, everyone, I'm still here, just busy! And I love you too, Nates, keep that vein open and writing your beautiful messages. Know that you're being read and being appreciated.
It's just the way life is, you know--how common, everyday concerns sometimes get the better of us, swamp and paralyze us although we know better.
Anyway, this here's just a quick post to reassure an old friend.
Will be posting the pics shortly (Nelda is likewise requesting for these according to Vivs, but again sorry, will upload pronto.
Warm regards to everyone and God bless!

Subject: Reminiscences of R-Day
Hi Nathan,
That was certainly a beautiful diary of the R-Day you wrote for us. I think you were able to vividly capture in print what every single one of us who made it to the reunion was feeling before, during and after the event. I think what really made it special was being able to get the chance to be transported back in time and relive the memories, even just for a day, of a part in our lives when everything seemed so simple yet so exhilirating.
No, Howard and I were not the least bit offended on any of the things written about us. On the contrary, we both really enjoyed reminiscing about the good old days. It had to take a reunion such as this for us to see each other again after thirty years. Can youimagine the impact of that?
Dinah, it was so nice to see you again. You hadn't changed--still the warm carefree pal from ages ago. Evie, you were such a revelation. You seem to have an eternal spring of beautiful prayers inside you! Art, so dignified and high-tech yet still the same sweet Art as I knew you before.
Pio, if there were to be a most-transformed-classmate award, I think you will win it hands down. You have such a beautiful family--it was so nice of you to bring them over. Fake, it was so refreshing meeting you again. My son was very much impressed with you!
Arnel, I just can't fathom how you can be so creative, witty, and spontaneous in your puns. You never seem to run out of jokes that bring the house down. By the way, I liked your son a lot. Seems like he has a lot of depth.
Buddy, maybe physically you're next to Pio in the most-transformed-classmate award. But the fiery El Presidente in you is still the same.
Tom, to me, you too are a revelation. I really enjoy your posts--well, at least when you still had the time.
Lettie, can't forget that you were the very first one who told me about this reunion. Thanks for that link.
Arlene S., also very refreshing to see and hear from you again, now with motherhood as your central role.
Arlene L., you are the same yet different. But different for the better definitely.
Joy, seeing you with Jessie and your kids really impresses us on how happy your homelife must be,
Vivienne, you're still as pretty, demure, and as feminine as you were in high school.
Brenda, thanks for your thoughtfulness in lending me your jacket.
Ruben, you haven't changed much. Still silent-looking. Maybe nasa loob ang kulo?
Ramon, Ikaw rin you haven't changed much. At least from your appearance.
The reunion was really worth the wait and the long (9 hours!) traffic-laden trip to Baguio. Howard joins me in thanking the Baguio group for all the efforts so cheerfully given, and like me, he also sends his best and warmest regards to everyone!

Hay, salamat  at nag post na din si Nelda at Tomas.
Kunak la no sinuta  "Simon Lana O. Soccato" Tomas  gayam.
Am not  so  worried whether  you read  my post;  just wanted it to serve  as  springboard for discussions.   Also, I wanted to know if I was normal or if some of  you felt the same and from our texting -- confirmed, we all had that R-Day hangover. 'Tsaka kung kumusta  na siempre, after the holidays,  blood pressure, uric acid levels with all that food etc.
For those  reading this who were not able to join R-Day 2003,    Nelda's  right, Pio  changed a  lot --  super tangkad na for  one.  And they even brought along their  baby! That was  really  nice. It was  refreshing,  in fact,  to  see each other again  after 30 years.
Anyway, about the  posting,  nakapag-unload  na ako  and am getting back on the workgrind; the vein is open pero medyo  may clot siguro (wahahaha) kaya  the next  wave  would come  before   the April reunion  AND after  it.  Or perhaps when anyone starts a topic which  we feel passionate about.
So  Maan  when  are you planning to come by?  Vivs, Arnel, et.al., maybe  we should start  planning for  it again?   Just  give  a txt or call. ---- nathan

Dear Nelda,
Thanks for the impressions you made. Indeed changes happen to everyone, some overt others not. I realized that there is one in all of us that did not- THE UNITY, THE FEELING OF BEING A PART OF EACH OTHER; THE HOPE TO BUILD A COMMUNICATION. Let us keep this spirit in us.
Ikaw din you looked still the sweet and smiling friend we used to have- sana we can hve more of these encounters " personal" that is . Meantime thank you to the e-mail it keeps us still in touch. Parang nandyan ka lang- but true enough emotions get stirred everytime I read the messages.
We'll continue to keep in touch. "Prayers can unlock what we can't ! !" Kung Hei fat choi !
Eve
