It's a great honor for me to be the third member of my family to receive an honorary doctorate from this great university. It's an honor to follow my great-Uncle Jim, who was a gifted physician, and my Uncle Jack, who is a remarkable businessman. Both of them could have told you something important about their professions, about medicine or commerce. I have no specialized field of interest or expertise, which puts me at a disadvantage, talking to you today. I'm a novelist. My work is human nature.
Real life is all I know.
Don't ever confuse the two, your life and your work.
The second is only part of the first. Don't ever forget what a friend once wrote Senator Paul Tsongas when the senator decided not to run for reelection because he'd been diagnosed with cancer: "No man ever said on his deathbed I wish I had spent more time in the office.
Don't ever forget the words my father sent me on a postcard last year: "If you win the rat race, you're still a rat ". Or what John Lennon wrote before he was gunned down in the driveway of the Dakota: "Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans."
You walk out of here this afternoon with only one thing that no one else has. There will be hundreds of people out there with your same degree; there will be thousands of people doing what you want to do for a living. But you will be the only person alive who has sole custody of your life. Your particular life. Your entire life.
Not just your life at a desk, or your life on a bus, or in a car, or at the computer.
Not just the life of your mind, but the life of your heart.
Not just your bank account, but your soul.
People don't talk about the soul very much anymore. It's so much easier to write a resume than to craft a spirit. But a resume is a cold comfort on a winter night, or when you're sad, or broke, or lonely, or when you've gotten back the test results and they're not so good.
Here is my resume. I am a good mother to three children. I have tried never to let my profession stand in the way of being a good parent. I no longer consider myself the center of the universe. I show up. I listen. I try to laugh. I am a good friend to my husband. I have tried to make marriage vows mean what they say. I show up. I listen. I try to laugh.
I am a good friend to my friends, and they to me. Without them, there would be nothing to say to you today, because I would be a cardboard cutout. But I call them on the phone, and I meet them for lunch. I show up. I listen. I try to laugh.
I would be rotten, or at best mediocre at my job, if those other things were not true. You cannot be really first rate at your work if your work is all you are.
So here's what I wanted to tell you today: get a life. A real life, not a manic pursuit of the next promotion, the bigger paycheck, the larger house. Do you think you'd care so very much about those things if you blew an aneurysm one afternoon, or found a lump in your breast? Get a life in which you notice the smell of salt water pushing itself on a breeze over Seaside Heights, a life in which you stop and watch how a red tailed hawk circles over the water gap or the way a baby scowls with concentration when she tries to pick up a cheerio with her thumb and first finger.
Get a life in which you are not alone. Find people you love, and who love you.
And remember that love is not leisure, it is work. Each time you look at your diploma, remember that you are still a student, still learning how to best treasure your connection to others. Pick up the phone. Send an e-mail. Write a letter. Kiss your Mom. Hug your Dad. Get a life in which you are generous. Look around at the azaleas in the suburban neighborhood where you grew up; look at a full moon hanging silver in a black, black sky on a cold night.
And realize that life is the best thing ever, and that you have no business taking it for granted. Care so deeply about its goodness that you want to spread it around. Take money you would have spent on beers and give it to charity. Work in a soup kitchen. Be a big brother or sister.
All of you want to do well. But if you do not do good, too, then doing well will never be enough. It is so easy to waste our lives: our days, our hours, our minutes. It is so easy to take for granted the color of the azaleas, the sheen of the limestone on Fifth Avenue, the color of our kids eyes, the way the melody in a symphony rises and falls and disappears and rises again.
It is so easy to exist instead of live.
I learned to live many years ago. Something really, really bad happened to me, something that changed my life in ways that, if I had my druthers, it would never have been changed at all. And what I learned from it is what, today, seems to be the hardest lesson of all.
I learned to love the journey, not the destination. I learned that it is not a dress rehearsal, and that today is the only guarantee you get. I learned to look at all the good in the world and to try to give some of it back because I believed in it completely and utterly. And I tried to do that, in part, by telling others what I had learned. By telling them this:
* Consider the lilies of the field. * Look at the fuzz on a baby's ear. * Read in the backyard with the sun on your face. * Learn to be happy. And think of life as a terminal illness because if you do you will live it with joy and passion as it ought to be lived.
Well, you can learn all those things, out there, if you get a real life, a full life, a professional life, yes, but another life, too, a life of love and laughs and a connection to other human beings. Just keep your eyes and ears open. Here you could learn in the classroom.
There the classroom is everywhere. The exam comes at the very end.
I found one of my best teachers on the boardwalk at Coney Island maybe 15 years ago. It was December, and I was doing a story about how the homeless survive in the winter months. He and I sat on the edge of the wooden supports, dangling our feet over the side, and he told me about his schedule, panhandling the boulevard when the summer crowds were gone, sleeping in a church when the temperature went below freezing, hiding from the police amidst the Tilt-a-Whirl and the Cyclone and some of the other seasonal rides.
But he told me that most of the time he stayed on the boardwalk, facing the water, just the way we were sitting now even when it got cold and he had to wear his newspapers after he read them. And I asked him why. Why didn't he go to one of the shelters? Why didn't he check himself into the hospital for detox? And he just stared out at the ocean and said, "Look at the view, young lady. Look at the view."
And every day, in some little way, I try to do what he said. I try to look at the view. And that's the last thing I have to tell you today, words of wisdom from a man with not a dime in his pocket, no place to go, nowhere to be.
Look at the view. You'll never be disappointed. 12 From: Leticia.Pilando@p... Date: Fri May 2, 2003 10:46 am Subject: RE: [ubsciencehigh_class73] we need more email addresses Dear Buddy,

Vivien 13 From: "buddyresurreccion" <jvr5678@y...> Date: Fri May 2, 2003 7:00 pm Subject: Definitely worth the read. =) A little girl had been shopping with her Mom in Wal-Mart. She must have been 6 years old, this beautiful red haired, freckle faced image of innocence. It was pouring outside. The kind of rain that gushes over the top of rain gutters, so much in a hurry to hit the earth it has no time to flow down the spout. We all stood there under the awning and just inside the door of the Wal-Mart. We waited, some patiently, others irritated because Nature messed up their hurried day. I am always Mesmerized by rainfall. I got lost in the sound and sight of the heavens washing away the dirt and dust of the world. Memories of running, splashing so carefree as a child came pouring in as a welcome reprieve from the worries of my day.
The little voice was so sweet as it broke the hypnotic trance we were all caught in. "Mom, let's run through the rain," she said.
"What?" Mom asked.
"Let 's run through the rain!" She repeated.
"No, honey. We'll wait until it slows down a bit," Mom replied.
This young child waited about another minute and repeated: "Mom, let's run through the rain,"
"We'll get soaked if we do," Mom said.
"No, we won't, Mom. That's not what you said this morning," the young girl said as she tugged at her Mom's arm.
"This morning? When did I say we could run through the rain and not get wet?
"Don't you remember? When you were talking to Daddy about his cancer, you said, 'If God can get us through this, he can get us through anything!"
The entire crowd stopped dead silent. I swear you couldn't hear anything but the rain. We all stood silently. No one came or left in the next few minutes. Mom paused and thought for a moment about what she would say.
Now some would laugh it off and scold her for being silly. Some might even ignore what was said. But this was a moment of affirmation in a young child's life. A time when innocent trust can be nurtured so that it will bloom into faith.
"Honey, you are absolutely right. Let's run through the rain. If GOD let's us get wet, well maybe we just needed washing," Mom said.
Then off they ran. We all stood watching, smiling and laughing as they darted past the cars and yes, through the puddles. They held their shopping bags over their heads just in case. They got soaked. But they were followed by a few who screamed and laughed like children all the way to their cars. And yes, I did. I ran. I got wet. I needed washing.
Circumstances or people can take away your material possessions, they can take away your money, and they can take away your health. But no one can ever take away your precious memories...So, don't forget to make time and take the opportunities to make memories everyday. To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven.
A friend sent this to me to remind me of life. Hope you enjoy it.
I HOPE YOU STILL TAKE THE TIME TO RUN THROUGH THE RAIN. God bless... 14 From: [email protected] Date: Fri May 2, 2003 7:12 pm Subject: New file uploaded to ubsciencehigh_class73 Hello,

With all these computers, networks, cell phones, email and the Web to bring us together, it's great to know that we've finally come around to getting in touch with each other again after all these years.
When Buddy, Let, Brenda and I got together for dinner last month, the import of 30 years having passed since we left UBSH really came crashing down on me. Has it really been that long? 30 years!
Now we all know we're no longer the active, nubile, fresh and sunny-looking youths we used to be. At least I ain't. And you know you ain't either, guys, come on, admit it, he-he.
So here's the deal: the first one to post his or her picture here gets a kiss from His Excellency Pres. Buddy and his trusty old ex-sec, me. And no, we're not talking about *old* pictures here, mind. Recent, candid, no-more-than-two-week-old pics taken of you showing how you look now!
To start the ball rolling, I'm going to post mine at the photos section soon as I post this message. It's a picture of me enjoying the beach at Subic last May 2, 2003. 2) Added a survey for your consideration. This is a good venue to measure how deeply our class thinks about recent world events, including political, moral and theological issues of import. Click on the "Polls" link to your left to vote on the latest poll.

Dear Buddy,
Yup, that's right, in fact I invited Nates over to join us when we had our first dinner, since he was coming down on that week's weekend. However for some reason he was unable to come down early for us.
I also got a text from Arnel, saying hi. Asked him if he was in Manila, and he said he was already in Baguio and had just come up from here the day before. I said, damn! He should've told us, we're so hungry and eager to see old friends when they're around.
So the rest of you guys, when you're around in Manila please don't be a stranger, give us a text or call so we can organize a meet even if for a short time only. In fact just to talk with you over the phone knowing you're close and we're breathing the same smog and sweating under the same sweltering sun already gives us pleasure.
So there, don't be strangers, it's us your bros and sis just around to meet wid you anywhere if you got the time!
Amen!

Dear Maane,
Mrs. Tiong! Funny you should remind us about her. Just saw someone who resembled her the other day and I stopped and thought she somehow looked familiar.
But of course now that you mention her it couldn't have been she I saw because the Mrs. Tiong I chanced upon days ago looked the same as the Mrs. Tiong who taught us 30 years ago!
Siguro parang one of my heretofore dead memory cells suddenly sprang to life to say, "Yeah, yeah, you do know her! What was her name again?" Sign of old age?
Hey, guys, remember our chant: "Tiong stop, Tiong go! Tiong stop, Tiong go! Tiong stop, Tiong go!" I recall we kept this up over and over like the crazy misfits that we are, out of her earshot of course, us laughing hilariously between ourselves.
And remember when we kept looking up her skirt by turns while she was seated in her desk and the rest of us crowding her kunyari asking damn fool questions like we were really interested about what she was teaching but really just distracting her so she wouldn't notice?
She had such nice white legs too, he-he!
Anyway, I guess you girls didn't know about that, just us growing boys wid our sex hormones shooting up like crazy during those heady days of high school!

Hello, friends!
Hope u’r all feelin fine today.
Came from the wake of Mrs. Agripina Salupen K. Pilando, that’s Letty’s mother to you. Went with the wife, former Jolyna B. Calub of Baguio City and Batch 73 also of SLU Girl’s High. Chanced on doc Bren Cawis Banda-ay.
There were many people considering the stature of the Pilando's, Letty's brod is the present Congressman of Mountain Province.
At this hour, around 9:30, baka tinatabon na si Mrs. Pilando.
In the wake, we talked about our forthcoming reunion and how good it is that we have an e-mail group and a website.
Buddy n Tom, that was really nice of you to conceive of this web and group e-mail.
We could not wait to visit and surf and post especially now and with the novelty of the idea. Pero lilipas din yan. Just like when I first discovered it also and I could talk with freinds all over the world. In real time, almost like chatting, send it now then get an answer in two minutes. Then it waned to same hour, then same day, and then occasional --- we still keep in touch, though.
Still, thanks, especially u Buddy; n Tom, too. If we keep this up, we just might still be mailing and bola-bolaing each other till we are 64.
Its like anchor's or guideposts that we are, I should say I am, to speak for myself, still sane and that I could still feel and relate with friends from a not-so-distant past thorugh an electronic medium.
Remember, Tom? when we used to refer to Alex and Fake and Ruben and other classmates who stayed in Baguio as "bato" that is un-moved, stable or rooted?
But we are really getting old and there are many things that have happened in our lives .... pero sana abot pa rin natin ang isa't isa.
Like the case of the friends of Letty's mom. When she was alive, Letty says an old lady who was a relative came over to visit and because her mom was sleeping, she waited practically the whole afternoon just to say hello and kumusta. Then she went bak to the "ili" in Sabangan (I think) passing through the long dusty and bumpy Halsema Highway which we know more as "Mountain TRail" And that was the last time they ever saw each other.
We really should be keeping in touch. more often, for whatever reason. Parang the friends who sat like book ends in Simon and Garfunkel's song.... "Long ago it was you, I had a photograph, pressed in my memory, that's all that's left of me..."
And yo know, what is really weird about this? Medyo naluluha pa ako, naknamputic, oo. napaka-damdaming bukid pa rin ako kung minsan. What is weird, as I was saying, is that I am communicating not only to one but to several friends on-line. Its very personal and private yet its a group I am talking/writing to.
Anyway, if you gone this far and have read through all this, perhaps this is also one function of this e-group --- to provide an escape valve for self-expression and for unloading or unburdening. Not to say for reminiscing and joking and heckling pa cguro.
Maane, the last time I saw miguel "Fake" pedroso was about five years ago when his father died. He retired as a chemical engineer of PASAR copper smelter in Leyte and was into farming. He has four (or is it five, Tom?) daughters.
I am also considering farming. I already have 3 colonies of bees and good links with a seed company and gathering information, funds and the guts to get into it and work the land
Tama na muna ito, baka magsawa na kayo sa akin.
Best Regards and God Bless us all.

Buddy 47 From: "Tomas A. Consolacion, Jr." <taconsolacion@y...> Date: Wed May 14, 2003 8:20 am Subject: Yo, Nates! You ok there, old buddy?
Quite a post you made there last Monday. You expressed many of our group's---nay, generation's---misgivings, fears, dreams, as each one of us now enter middle age and try to cope or deal with it in our own unique way. Truly I was hearing a maudlin voice in the wilderness as I read your post. It dawned on me that we now measure our time not by the years we've gone through since we were born, but by the years we expect to stay on until we too, like Let's mom, ass on. My condolences, dear Let.
Funny you should mention Bookends, Simon and Garfunkel's famous album inspired by the phenomenon of aging, about memory and loss, of youth and living. "Preserve your memories/They're all that's left you." Weren't we only in our late teens or early twenties when we first enjoyed this song? Now it's become so much more meaningful.
In our youth we thought we could do anything. Our bodies were powerful; we had great personal and professional ambitions, lofty, long-term goals. We wanted to accomplish great things, and I'm sure many of us did make giant strides during our twenties and thirties, look where some of us are now. Do you remember, we wanted to change the world! And a lot of grief that brought to some of us. Truth be told, come on, many of our goals remain far out of reach, despite our best efforts.
Somewhere in the past few years our hair have begun to thin a bit...in Bud's case, a lot, he-he. We can barely read but insist we're fine, denying the pair of glasses we keep in our pockets. We can't play soccer or run up and down the stairs like we used to. We realize we never will again. I've gained a lot of weight for no apparent reason, other than eating a lot, he-he. Now we can't drink as much beer; in fact, some of us don't even want to! Now, that's a bummer!
I realize now I'm never going to be able to climb Mount Everest (but I could still do Apo or Pulag with a little training. Did I tell you I'm into mountaineering now? At least I try, when I have the time. Since 2000 I've done Pinatubo, Banahaw, Cristobal, Buntot Palos, Daguldol, Batulao, etc.) I realize now Maui Taylor will never have the slightest bit of interest in me. I'm not going to be president of Ayala. I can never afford a Pajero unless it's company issue. It's simply not going to happen.
But on the whole I'm happy. I've a family I love and who loves me in return. I don't regret the fact that I've only one kid, who's now fourteen and thinks she's much better than me in everything but I try to beat her everytime I can. I got good friends, like you my classmates in high school who've remained close to my heart all these years.
I remember a song I used to hum, forgot the title na, but here's how it went:
When we were children we used to dream Of flying in spaceships to worlds unseen But somewhere along the line we left our dreams behind Buried beneath the daily news with its bold headlines But down deep somewhere Those dreams are still there It's never too late to live out a dream It's never too late to try something new It's never too late to follow your heart It's never too late to bring out the best in you.
Truly amazing medium this convergence of computers and communications in the Internet. Hope it wouldn't fade as fast as you seem to think it will in your post, truly I would like us to be in touch holding each other's hands online until we're 64 or even 94.
Fake as you said retired from PASAR many years ago, together with his wife who was I think nurse of the same company. With their retirement benefits and daughters they hied off to Carayman to start a farm, the "scientific way" according to him, somewhat like the pioneers in the wild west in the early days of America. And like these settlers, I think Fake is having some trouble making a new life after his previous work. He used to stay over in our apartment when he was in Manila. Last time he came he brought his entire family. Fake had this really long long hair that he tied up in a pony tail, the old mustache, still full of his new dreams. That was oh, two years ago and the last we've heard of him. One of these days when I can get some time off I'll try to go off and look for him in the hinterlands of Samar.
I wish there were more of us posting---or at least reading or lurking---in this group. Hello? Be good to hear a grunt from you!
Hi Bud (looks promising, your photo shows some eyebrows left, that's good to know), Maane (so you're a nurse, keep clear of this SARS thing hear dat, girl?), Let, Bren, Viv, Henry!
Now here's another poem or song for you before I conclude this really long post:
Love Lights the Flame by Steve Ducey
I looked into your eyes Windows to your soul That glow I recognized From a time of old I can't say when or where I just know it's true We loved a lifetime then Now we're here again It's true You are the love I knew Our fires died before Now here we are again.
In general, that's for all of you. But if you think it's specially dedicated to some of you... (he-he) you know who you are. 48 From: nathan alcantara <Nathan_bgo@y...> Date: Wed May 14, 2003 10:34 am Subject: [ubsciencehigh_class73]Am OK n' getting betterer

Am just becoming a mutant perhaps like dem X-men drawing on-line comfort, solace, inspiration and maybe reason to go on with dis life. Its nice that we are wired together in this group. And I think it worked because I feel revived with your posting. n Maane's and Bud, too. Agpayso, Bud, this getting betterer and beterrer. This is not just a social thing or kumusta, goodbye see you on December 27 and all that. I feel it is a life support group much like the group that Maane landed with in 9/11 land when it was still the land of milk and honey. We, at least I, can pour our heart out and shucks, I do not even have to drink to shed of my inhibitions because yu are all friends. AND, may pinagsamahan na tayo kaya huli pa rin natin ang isa't-isa. We do not see each other but we hold on to the life that we knew about each other and we look forward to seeing each other again after 30 years has passed in our respective lives. So what are you doing with GMA, u said, Bud? Much like perhaps the question what you doin with clubs and balls when u r supposed to be a general already, mistah (hope u dont mind me calling dat). Truth to tell, I even have a photo wid Macoy (his arms on my back) and also with FVR smiling and all teeth proud like a puffer fish. But like I told Maane in a personal note to her, you of all people, Bud, would know that it comes with the job. As glamorized gofers or mga dakilang alalay -- taking care, nay, babysitting presidential media persons, govt functionaries and factotums (or is it factota) -- siempre yong mga alalay sa paligid puedeng magpa-kodak with the bida kung may pagkakataon, di ba? Wala lang, ganon talaga. Look at Vic Corpuz and the General from Cebu who joined the NPA at a very late stage in his life. Who can say what's going to happen, really?
"Scientific farming." Now that's something. Like I said, I am gathering information, funds but most of all the guts to work the land. This is where life springs forth really. Ti kamayatan a pagbiagan, kadua, ket ti panagpatanor ti mula. I think I heard this in one of dem dramas in our grade school years. Enuf said. Mamaya ulit. Sometimes I feel that everything is relative and that all the causes I worked for, lived for and were willing to die for are just a passing fancy and that when we grow up I just have to plod on and on because I owe my soul to the company store.
Well folks, that ain't true.
Anyway, let me give you the lowdown on that May 17, 2003 mini- reunion at Country Waffles in Camp John Hay.
Present: Emmet, Vivienne, Dax and son Ivan, Arnel, Arlene Luna, Letty, Joy and Jessie and moi.
For all his rough and obnoxious ways, Dax was the first to leave but he showed his sensitivity because he left some amount for `tang Emmet. Lasing na kasi s'ya nang dumating daw, tapos nag beer pa ng dalawa.
Siempre kuento kuento, kalokohan, silip ng panti sa hubcap ng volks, Tiong stop atbp. (Did you know that Arnel had a fancy for Maanne pala? Bago yan ha? Nakakayanig di ba? At kilala ba ninyo daw si Johnny Cama? Tell me about it if you remember.)
Then enter two ladies. Followed by two guys, Guess who they were? On the table next to us was Greggy and Irene Marcos-Araneta and two friends, outside were their driver bodyguards. Bahagi daw yata sila ng reunion, Special Guests.
The best part of it was we were remisnicing about Martial Law, Emmet's arrest, my sudden disappearance detention which caused me not to graduate and how the whole class was interrogated and that you were all threatened daw that you will not graduate kung hindi kayo aamin. Si willy bernardo daw was saying umamin na kasi kayo. Eh, ano naman kaya ang aaminin ninyo? Wahahahahahaha.
That's when I reminded them isn't it serendipity-like the coincidence that we are talking about ML and right next to us is the daughter of the Dictator herself in the Flesh -- the girl who was able to draw $300 million from their Swiss account?
Oo nga they said. Tuloy pa rin and kuento.
Wahahahahaha. Marcos Hitler diktador tuta. wahahahaha
What more if they learn na ang pinag-uusapan namin na Buddy ay yong pesteng tenyente na kumalaban sa Tatay niya na nagsabi on world wide TV and quoted even on Time Magazine "I'd rather die fighting your illegitimate regime than defending it?" Di Ba mas masaya? WaaahahahahahahA.
You should have seen daw the eyes of Irene and their fat companion! Makakasugat daw, the looks that could kill. Kumuha daw ng maraming newspapers at kunwaring nagbabasa pero nakatingin sa table namin in side glances! Eh, so what, Di BA! We left na hindi ko sila tinignan pero sabi ng mga ko-batch natin na masama daw ang tingin ni Irene sa grupo. I almost stood in front of the establishment with clenched fist to shout Marcos, Hitler ….. pero, HOY! sabi ni Arlene.
We had the laugh of our lives while goin home with Joy, Jessie and Arlene. Pero sabi nila, kung nasa poder pa sila, di na tayo makakauwi ngayon! Nakaka praning di ba? Wahahahahaha.
It was just a dream? Maybe it was a dream sequence but it was God's hands that put us together, at this time in this mini-reunion, and at the time of our glorious and rowdy high school days.
So you see my friends, high school was a time of innocence and awakening and the planting of the seeds of justice and freedom and the nurturing of friendships that will stand the test of time. And I believe the best is yet to come for all of us especially in God's hands.

Yap. Been back last week but had some catching up to do after 2 weeks of leave.
Thanks to everybody for the kind words and the support in this difficult time. Mama is now enjoying eternal peace and happiness. We know she is UP there somewhere... guiding us. But she leaves a void so immense, we will miss her so much, as she has been central to our lives.
One advise to you all, my friends, show your love and care to your parents while they are still alive... they deserve it. There will always be a lingering feeling that you could have given more...But if you know that you have given them your all, you will be at peace...
Last week-end was my first week-end here in Manila after a few months of being in Baguio every week-end. Somehow, I miss waking up at 2:00 am Saturday for the trip up to Baguio. Watching the sun rise in Tarlac. Sometimes, we are lucky... the sun rises just when we are somewhere in Tarlac where there are still some remaining rice fields by the highway.
Unlike some big shots spending the week-end at Plantation Bay (business cum pleasure, mukhang more pleasure, Tom!), we contended ourselves with a Saturday evening in Intramuros... in the rain. Central South Mindanao is the flavor of the month.... brought back a lot of memories of my stay in that part of the country - South Cotabato.
Tom, ba't si Nates lang ang gusto mong ka-inuman. I know Nates is charming (kaya napa-ibig niya yung housemate ko sa LB), and can write well. O baka naman dahil close na sila ngayon ni GMA. Palakas ka rin ano? Hindi na nga tatakbo si GMA sa 2004, eh. Or do you know something we still don't.
Talked to Beth Frondozo Manuzon last nite. She will invite us to her house daw for good food and karaoke (their business is karaoke machines)...one of these days. Give her some time to polish her culinary skills and/or singing.
While waiting for Beth's invitation (hope it won't be very long.... baka abutan ng reunion), we would really like to meet up with those coming from Baguio (or anywhere). Call us (Buddy, Tom, Brenda or myself) and we can meet. We surely need your thoughts for the coming reunion.
Thanks to Vivien who have arranged for the mini reunion in Baguio 2 weeks back. It certainly was heart warming seeing Emmett and more of Class 73.
Have to get back to work...just like Tom, mahirap ang empleyado not like Buddy and Brenda who are their own bosses...

Hiya People.
Good to know ur all bak. So, Mr. Otisamot Noicalosnoc aside from mountaineering, you into snorkeling. Ganda ha. With the family pa. There is a place in Bacnotan ringed by reefs and the marine life is fantastic. The blue, yellow and red fish brush against your legs but the sea is extremely salty. Maane, that's nice of you to have sent that postcard. I-print out ko pa my letter to Fake. Lets, dats good advice. We really should bare our hearts out to the olds. Like what Tom posted earlier, "...we now measure our time not by the years we've gone through since we were born, but by the years we expect to stay on until we too, like Let's mom, pass on. This was his response to an earlier posting when I was in a melancholic philosophical mode. This was when we were in a middle of a major tiff with the wife because of my past indiscretion. There at least its out now! But I cannot afford that emotional mode now and I do not want to depress anyone. Like Maane whose hormones started acting up daw. Wahahahaha. Truth to tell, balik ako ng balik the past week but it was a little silent and cold. Now tis getting warm again. HELLO PEOPLE! Anyway, we --the wife and I -- are still holding on for now despite all and I do hope we can pull through even through this year up to our reunion. If any of the guys are reading this, DO NOT TAKE THAT LEFT TURN! It's not worth it at all. Tom, a climb to Mt. Pulag by March or April would be nice for the family. We might join the the third annual media climb. Isu ti planoc for the family for next year if all goes well no adda kaasi ti Apo. I've been up there twice in the late 1980's pero balikan lang, no sleep over. If you plan to join, get ready with 2,000 for the 3 of you, tents and warm clothing. If I remember right, our batch also had a climb up you namesake, Mt. Santo Tomas, di ba? In those days, hindi kumpleto ang high school without a trek even only up to the radar station. Sige, Tom, lets get silly drunk one time but I can get hard stuff or wine only because beer leaves my joints and my "gurong" throbbing. Too much Uric acid in my blood. I can get a max of three beers and I'm zonked then "agpiskel" my extremities. Name the day n place, pards, and we'll bargaina so we can meet. Ken ammom, lakay, funny also how our experiences get somehow related. When we went to Tabuk last week for the Regional Dev't Council meeting, we got the chance to go white water rafting! Y@HOO! ganon pala, it was only for a short stretch and the waters of the Chico River were not that wild yet. Nevertheless, Dr. Gil Bautista went overboard in the other raft, walang nahulog sa aming raft. OK lang naman, he just got wet we all had flotation vests. That poem Love Lights the Flame by Steve Ducey is really nice. Next time na lang ung heavy stuff Till next posting ------ nathan 56 From: "Tomas A. Yup, seems I've become more sports-minded this late in my life.
About three years back we dared each other at the office if we still had the gumption to climb a mountain, us finding it difficult to climb the stairs when the lifts were out. Then we read an article in the Bulletin about a group of yuppies having the time of their lives by trekking to the Mt. Pinatubo caldera. The next weekend those of us who ultimately had the "commitment"--just 4 of us--packed off the best way we knew and followed the trail to that defunct volcano. Turned out the experience was unique, thrilling and priceless, albeit dead tiring and truly challenging to these old bones, idle muscles and masses of fat.
We also realized we knew shit about mountaineering, but we liked it, 3 of us at least. So we took some BMC (basic mountaineering course), affiliated with hiker's clubs, lined up climbs when we could, and never looked back. And that's how I've become an outdoors person in a limited sense--despite the potbelly and being overweight, because I can do it only so often. I also got myself a bike, and most Sundays I can pedal from Cubao all the way to that road of perdition, you know, the billion-peso Macapagal Boulevard to Cavite and back, taking all of three hours.
The other day I sent a fond SMS message to old flame Beth on a number biz-carded to me by Letty. Turned out it was her 21-year old son's cell phone! Got me into trouble, but she responded and I asked if she had a land line and whether I could just call her na lang instead of scandalizing her brood. I eagerly dialled the home phone she texted back and for the next hour we did a telebabad session like we were still teens--which we probably are in our hearts, you know?
So there we were, 30 years of longing, memories and good cheer traveling through the phone lines and pouring out of our phones, two weary souls coming together again after such a long interregnum. I swear my phone set had steam rising off it when I laid it back in its cradle after the interminable so longs. My left ear ached too!
As to what we talked about, guys, that would have to be just between us. But you can be sure we talked about the old times, our love lives, sex, family, college, careers, God, children and raising them, her hubby, my wife, domestic problems, etc. Will try to write about this some other time. Let's just wait for Beth to bare her heart out to us when she gets around to it, but hey, she's still the old warrior princess and baby, she some hot mamma with a lot of fire left. For you guys, may asim pa! Beth says hello to all of you!
Nates, past indiscretion, huh? Is dat singular or plural? He-he. Why am I not surprised? Just goes to show you're as manyakis as the rest of us, mwa-ha-ha-ha! But seriously, it's only human sometimes to get side-tracked and lost when unintended relationships develop between one's self and associates, for instance. Especially during moments of vulnerability, you know when these strike. Just no way of getting around dat. But in the end you realize you exchanged promises with just one person and by God you better stick to your vows or you'll never get peace and the grace for the rest of your life.
That Pulag climb seems interesting. That's a major climb di ba? Better start working out na this early, shed off the unwanted lbs. It'll probably just be me--Neng and KC love the beach but that's all I'm afraid. Besides, the wife's heart probably can't stand the stress and the thin air up there. I'll see what I can do about KC.
Now that you bring it up, yeah, we did climb Mt. Sto. Tomas once, where instead of bottles of water we chugged Ginebra on the way up. Dumb crazy kids! But a worthwhile experience.
Getting silly drunk was just an expression, of course. The last time I did dat was, oh, years ago, when I had one too many glasses of red wine during a company social. Matindi pala ang tama nun? Couldn't remember how I got home, turns out I was ferried home by a company driver. I also puked myself out on the floor of the spanking new limo! But sure, let's do it again sometime, us and the rest of the gang too, whoever is around!
Stormy weather here in Manila this past few days. Hope the weather is fine for you out there in other parts of the world. From my little corner here then, that's all for now, I bid you adieu, sweet fellows, till next posting. Keep the flame burning, the heart beating and the soul hoping for that fine reunion day in December when we can get together as one class again.

Nice to see Arnel finally sign in and make a post.
Hi Maane, musta ka na?
Just read your two posts just now and it occurred to me: since yung sulat ni Maane e tipong breathless stream-of-consciousness na tuloy-tuloy without punctuation, while on the other hand yung kay Arnel naman e puro period, maybe you two can strike a deal and share Arnel's treasure lode of periods so we can read your two posts better, he-he! Just joking!
Warm regards to everyone!

It is Friday afternoon and am just getting ready to leave but not after I read all the new mails. Really good to see that Arnel is now on-line. And Maane, thanks for all the advise (even if some are not applicable to me and Vivien). Sige, pagsabihan mo pa sila...It sure takes an expert to teach...
Maane, try to encourage naman the others there to login to this homepage. You are a great example, natuto ka rin mag e-mail... madali lang naman, di ba? Magaling naman tayong lahat mag-type, pumasa nga tayo sa Typing class. Arnel, you sure have good memory. How do we contact all the others? Do they have families still in Baguio?
Nates, make sure that in your next trip to Manila, you make it a point to have time to see us. We really need to start getting some inputs for December 27 and start organizing. Nagma-mana na ako sa Swiss, kailangan organized.
Vivien, mag post ka naman. You have been very helpful in contacting our friends there and was instrumental to the success of the mini reunion at Country Waffles. Di mo ba napansin, nangangantiyaw si Arnel. We have to support our single-blessedness.
Had lunch with Buddy last wednesday at his terrritory. We visited the Intel plant which was a few kilometers from his golf course so had a good reason to ask for a free lunch. Unfortunately, it was raining and had no chance to go around but Eagle Ridge is huge. While I was there, andun din si Fidel Ramos coordinating daw a golf tournament. Sayang, my cell phone is an old reliable model and not one of those with video and camera capabilities – I would have taken a photo of Buddy and Fidel. Nathan and GMA, Buddy and Fidel... . What about Tom and Erap... Tom, di ba palagi si Erap sa casino?
Am having dinner with Brenda tonight. We planned to go to Lupe Cafe at Guadalupe but since weather is not very good, decided to have dinner na lang at home... you are invited... kung gusto niyo ng tilapia and atsara. Marami ring left over wine and cheese...
