On-going Community Service Projects

The Salmon Model Horse 4-H Club has several on-going community service projects.

As part of their ongoing International Community Service Project, club members have been promoting the plight of twelve remaining Abaco Barb horses on Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas for a few years now. (To learn more about this, please visit the News & Events section of our website).

Another constant are the myraid of articles constantly popping up about the club and their ties to Arkwild/Abaco Youth Horse Project in such national publications as Young Rider, Farm & Ranch, and Breyer's Just About Horses, as well as the National 4-H website and the State 4-H newsletter. In late 2006 both the Post Register out of Idaho Falls and the Herald Tribune ran stories on the club's financial & promotional drive to help the Abaco Barbs.

Stateside, as their local Community Service Project, members have been collecting pop tops for the Ronald McDonald House in Boise, ID for a number of years. In 2004 they collected two five-gallon buckets and one gallon jug of tops, for which they earned a Certificate of Appreciation award. By the end of 2005, the group had collected about 6 gallons worth of pop-top tabs. For more information about a Ronald McDonald Pop Top Program in your area, visit their website at www.rmhc.com/kids/poptab_collection/index.html

Another local Community Project generally occurs during the Christmas holidays when club members host annual bake sale fundraisers, the proceeds of which are used to purchase gifts for a youngster through the local "Christmas is Sharing" program. Additionally, the kids also make decorative pine & ornament filled baskets for local residents at the Discovery Care Center.

Every spring during the Salmon Select Horse Sale, club members take part in yet another community service project by helping man a booth, quietly and consistently gathering information for the Lemhi/Custer County Equine Resource List.

In 2006 the National 4-H program became a part of the President's Volunteer Service and our club is now listed as a certifying organization. For this project, members are encouraged to keep track of their volunteer hours and any youth who volunteers for 50 or more hours a year are eligible for an award from the President. Adults can qualify after 100 hours a year. For more information on this project, visit their website at Presidential Service Awards.

Other Activities & Projects

The Salmon Model Horse 4-H Club (in conjunction with the Custer Co. Hot Wheels Model Horse 4-H Club) took on the task in 2006 & 2007 of heavily promoting their unique "horseless" model club idea as a Statewide Project: traveling & setting up table displays, talking to other groups wanting to start clubs of their own, passing out flyers, writing letters and articles as well as researching other online model clubs with a 4-H venue, with the hopes of sharing ideas & keeping in touch, perhaps even creating a future network of live and photo show opportunities amongst these groups. It is hoped that in time, this "statewide" project will expand to include other states as well!

To further promote 4-H, the group even started offering special Hi-Point 4H Exhibitor certificates during 2007 & 2008 to the Model Horse Live Show circuit in hopes of attracting & rewarding 4H youth all over the country.

Started thinking about future needs down the road such as having one single universal rulebook. There are numerous routes we could go like fashioning it after the state 4-H book, or perhaps more towards a real breed association book like AQHA or AHSA. Then again, since it is a MODEL project, there's the suggestion of following the official North American Model Horse Association (NAMHSA) rulebook. Alot to consider. Additionly, we spoke with Peter Stone of Stone Horse Collectibles about our club & he seemed genuinely interested in the whole 4-H model horse project idea, esp. since Stone Horse is currently pushing for a universal 4-H model horse book of their own.

On occasion the club sends penpal letters to the First Abaco Boy Scout Troop in the Bahamas, as well as post cards and notes to troops currently stationed in Baghdad.

On occasion the club will host various model horse shows for other outside 4-H Model Horse Clubs.

And on occasion, as part of their club fundraising activities, the group will sell special 4-H chocolate candy bars which always prove to be a big hit!

The Traveling Adventures of Bud & Clover!

Traveling Adventures of Bud & Clover

See what Clover and his sidekick Bud (official SMH4HC Mascots) are up to as they jettison around the world promoting the many virtues of 4-H!

Some members keep a club so strong
While others join just to belong
Some dig right in, some serve with pride
Some go along just for the ride.
Some volunteer to do their share
While some lie back and just don't care.
Some always pay their dues ahead
Some get behind for weeks instead.
Some do their best, some build, some make
Some do nothing but only take.
Some lag behind and let things go
Some never help their club to grow.
Some drag, some pull, some don't, some do
Consider WHICH of these are you...
