IDAHO'S MODEL HORSE 4-H CLUBS:
Currently there are only two region-specific 4-H Model Horse Clubs in Idaho, the Salmon Model Horse 4-H Club in Salmon and the Hot Wheels Model Horse 4-H Club in Challis. Both clubs are listed as horseless-horse projects though some of the members have live horses.
The Salmon Model Horse 4-H Club is lead by Susan Dudasik, an equine journalist and mule enthusiast. Susan also enjoys the challenge of trail events and has given her "Horseless Trail Class" presentation at the Western Regional 4-H Leaders' Forums in Alaska and California. She also does Trail class clinics and teaches Trail classes at the Idaho State 4-H Camp in Alpine, Wyoming.
The Hot Wheels Model Horse 4-H Club is lead by Diane Fisher, an avid model horse hobbyist and EMS. Together Susan and Diane promote the Model Horse project at various 4-H events around the country and recently Diane was instrumental in producing a video on "How to Start a 4-H Model Horse Club." The video should be available for purchase shortly.
OTHER STATE MODEL HORSE 4-H CLUBS:
If you google "4-H Model Horse Clubs," a few entries do pop up so we know there are at least a handful of similar clubs around the country. As widespread and popular as the Model Horse Hobby is in the public sector, we're a little surprised that the idea hasn't spilled over more in the 4-H Clubs sector. Or perhaps there are more out there but we don't know about them because they simply don't have webpages or blogs or yahoogroups ... yet.
START A MODEL HORSE 4-H CLUB:
If your area does not already have one, consider becoming a 4-H club leader and starting one! It's not that difficult, and can be a very rewarding experience for you, your community, as well as for the kids you serve. There are countless kids out there who are absolutely horse-crazy but cannot afford, nor have space for, a LIVE horse of their own. But I bet their bedrooms are covered in horsey memorabilia, with a few MODEL HORSES sitting on their shelves! See?! You're halfway there! They'd do anything to belong to a group that was fun, exciting, and educational, especially if that group was as horse-crazy as they are in the first place! Make a difference in a kid's life. Mentor them. Through 4-H (and the Model Horse Hobby) young people learn leadership, citizenship, and Life skills.

In 2006 the National 4-H program became a part of the President's Volunteer Service and our club is now listed as a certifying organization. For this project, members are encouraged to keep track of their volunteer hours and any youth who volunteers for 50 or more hours a year are eligible for an award from the President. Adults can qualify after 100 hours a year. For more information on this project, please visit their website.
