Who We Are

Mission Statement

Who We Are:

The Salmon Model Horse 4-H Club began in 1993 and ran for two years before going on a long hiatus until the summer of 2002 when it returned as part of the week-long Project Camp. The youths had so much fun they wanted to continue so after the 2002 Lemhi County Fair, the club officially returned as a county 4-H project.

The club meets once a month either at the County Commissioner's Annex or the Salmon Library. We also have two or three all-day mini-camps so members can make tack and work on scenes for their show photos.

Members also participate in a live model horseshow and display their models at the Lemhi County Fair in August.

What We Do:

By using model horses, members learn the basics such as colors, markings, and breeds. They also learn to make their own model-sized English and Western saddles, bridles, and halters. Members participate in model horse shows which are run the same as real or live horse shows. There are classes like English and Western Pleasure, Trail, Jumping, and Gymkhana events. Showing in a model show requires knowledge of the various class rules and paying close attention to detail, since an entry could be placed down simply because the saddle pad was crooked, the halter too loose or the cinch too far back. As the members advance, they also learn to customize their models by repainting them and adding mohair.

Model Horse 4-H Clubs are the perfect answer for youngsters too young to participate in the regular 4-H horse program or for those who can't, for various reasons including health, have a real horse.

Dudasik on current mount, Ginger

Introducing Leader, Susan Dudasik

The Salmon Model Horse 4-H Club is lead by Susan Dudasik, an veteran equine journalist and long time mule enthusiast.

Susan also enjoys the challenge of trail events and even gave a special "Horseless Trail Class" presentation at the Western Regional 4-H Leaders' Forums in Alaska and California. In addition, she has also taught Trail class clinics in California, Florida, and Idaho, including the Idaho State 4-H Camp in Alpine, Wyoming.

Pictured here is Susan's current mount, "Ginger," moments before the start of a parade. They can be seen at various shows around the Idaho countryside!

Dudasik riding champion mule, Josephine

Aboard her favorite mount Josephine, a Thoroughbred molly mule, Susan competed successfully on the California open show circuit for many years in a field generally dominated by horses.

Together they earned the title of World Champion Green Trail Mule at the 1987 Bishop Mule Days, which later lead to an invitation to ride in the prestigous 100th Tournament of Roses Parade, as an Ambassador representative of the longear breed everywhere in this country!
