The Genre Known As Punk PUNK ETHICAL STANDARDS There are no 10 comandments for this religion. Many people have different standards to which they abide; what one person calls a sell-out, another calls a great artist with huge aspirations. Punk fans or even semi-punk fans such as myself, find major lables to be ...somewhat unsettling. Some believe, if you sign to a major label, you are a sell-out, regardless of whether or not you change the size of your head to conform to the size of your bank account. Others see it in a different way. If you can have 100% creative control, why not make a go at it? However, believing one philosophy over another does not necessarily make you loyal or disloyal to the punk cause. For more on punk ethics see The Punk Manifesto.
Punk is conceivably the most adaptable form of music in modern times. Love it or despise it, you cannot deny it's influence on the progressive rock bands of the past or the influences it has been responcible for in the current music scene. There seems to be some confusion about what Punk is. In this article, I hope to clarify. BASIC PUNK: The most savage and obnoxious form of music. Designed to be loud and offensive to the weak of heart. Full of raw energy, even if it is lacking in quality.

My personal favorite is the mix between punk and an all time favorite, Heavy Metal. Lets face it, sometimes Metal can become slow and dull. But when you mix the energy of an angry pissed off croud of people, with the powerful riffs of metal, the result is a totally unique sound that is not quite metal, but has a punk quality to it. Revolutionary rock artist of the late 80's and early 90's such as Pearl Jam and Soundgarden shaped the future of alternitive rock by using these combined sounds. You can call it whatever you want, Alternative, Grunge, or just plain old Modern Rock, the basic compilation between punk and metal is still there.
Noteworthy Links!!! A History Of Punk - This is an excellent site that covers most of the underground movement in general. Specifically the Punk movement. A MUST for all interested in punk. It is true what they say - "You can't learn what is, until you learn what was."
In the true form of punk, there is little structure to the sound being played. Someone might try out a new sound or a bass riff, but that's about as creative as it gets. VARIATIONS ON PUNK You have to understand that punk itself isn't just a genre; it's an incorporated sound and an ethical viewpoint. The dirty sound of Punk can easily be mixed with other genres of music; examples of this are numerous. Lets take "Pop music" (the most accessible and ironicly the most disposable). If you mix the melodies of Pop music with punk, you can end up with bands like Greenday, or to a certain extent, The Offspring. Greenday may not represent all punk supporters, but they are a perfect example of mixing the energy of punk with the melodies of popular music.
