| Led Zeppelin were the masters of their Genre. Many hard rock bands would emulate for years after the bands demise. However, the band did face plenty of obstacles on their way to fame and rock n' roll glory. Poor reviews in magazines like Rolling Stone couldn't stop the momentum of this band, who (for their time) were considered just about as dark as hard rock could get. It all began with the now legendary Jimmy Page who was considered one of England's veteran guitarist having worked with bands like The Who and The Kinks. He soon met bassist John Paul Jones and considered collaborating together in the future. The two became three when Page went out to Birmingham to see a potential lead singer, Robert Plant. Plant suggested his friend and former bandmate John Bonham to play drums. The name Led Zeppelin is contributed to friend John Entwistle (recently deceased bassist for The Who) who said "the band would go down like a led balloon." There second album "Led Zeppelin II" achieved much more success with the song Whole Lotta Love reaching the #4 spot on the charts (ARTIST DIRECT). Other truly great songs include "Livin Lovin Maid" and "Heartbreaker." "Led Zeppelin III" did well for touring, but their best record (in most people's opinion) came with "Led Zeppelin IV" which contained Stairway To Heaven conceivably the most famous rock song of all time. Led Zeppelin was growing in popularity and was gaining acceptance among critics but when the Punk Rock Revolution broke out in England, Zeppelin and other "BIG" hard rock bands were targeted at least in part as sell outs. This wore off by 1980 and Zeppelin was ready to go on tour again in the States. Before departing for a tour in the U.S. the group decided to play a few small gigs in Europe. Berlin, September 7, 1980 would be Led Zeppelin's last concert. On September 25 drummer John Bonham died of asphyxiation after heavy drinking. After the band broke up the Legend of Led Zeppelin continued through the well planned re-release of albums and previously unreleased material. Solo careers have been met with varying degrees of success, with Robert Plant's being the most successful. Page and Plant have reunited several times to compose new music and play classic Zeppelin songs on tour without bassist John Paul Jones. However there has never been a real Led Zeppelin Reunion. Some believe however, that a Zeppelin reunion might be underway; in which case John Bonham's son will take his fathers place. These reports are unconfirmed but if it's true the tour could be held sometime in 2003. |
| After releasing their first album "Led Zeppelin" the band went on an extensive tour with Jimmy Page's reputation pushing the group along as well. The album achieved no immediate success, but it is now considered on of rock's best debut records. |
