Wayland's Smithy

Wayland's Smithy is also a neolithic long barrow. It is not far from the White Horse at Uffinton. It was built around the time of 3,700 - 3,400 BCE(Before Common Era). It was constructed in two phases. The first construction was a ridged wooden mortuary hut with a stone floor. There were 14 bodies found there surrounded by sarsen boulders and then covered in chalk. This was then destroyed to make way for the present arrangement of chambers, which is construted of large sarsen stones. The mound is 185 feet long and 43 feet wide at the south end.
