Dill



Dill (Peucedanum graveolus)

Common Names:
Dill seed, Dill fruit, Aneto, Anethum graveolus, Fructus anethi.

Occurrence:
Indigenous to Mediterranean districts and South Russia and is cultivated in England and Europe.

Parts used:
The dried ripe fruit. An oil obtained from the fruit is almost identical to oil of Caraway, both containing limonene and carvone.

Magick/Lore:
Dill is a herb of protection. It has been used to repel negative energies and 'black' Magick. It keeps ones mind clear, and gives strenght to reason. It has been used to protect the user from falling prey to results of the belief in superstition.

Dill is also an herb used in blessing, particularly those for the home and kitchen. As such it is a good choice for kitchen Magick, to bring an air of well-being to yuor guests.

Remedial/Medicinal:
Dill is high in Calcium. Many herbalists recommend Dill to ease colic in infants in the form of distilled water, and to promote the flow of milk in nursing women. Given as dillwater which is very good for childrens flatulence or disorderd digestion. Oil of Dill is used in medicine in largely the same way, but is also used in perfuming soaps.

Administer as:
Distilled water, essential oil.

Dill is a:
Stimulant, aromatic, carminative, stomachic.
