Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) Common Names: Priest's crown, swine's snout, Lion's Tooth, Pu Gong Ying, Pissenlit, and Telltime. Occurrence: Widely found across the northern temperate zone in pastures, meadows and waste ground. Parts used: The root and leaves. The main constituents of the root are taraxin, a bitter substance, and taraxacerin, an acid resin, along with the sugar inulin. Magick/Lore: It is aid that a dandelion in one's dream is a symbol od difficult times ahead. What they usually neglect to add is that these times are of advantage to the wise, for tey are times of change, and can be understood and worked into a better situation. Weather Magick says that seeing the fluff blown free from the head of a Dandelion is an indication of rain coming, should this happen when you feel no wind in the air. Although the plantery association is Jupiter because of the juice and medicinal value of the herb, the Dandelion observes the Sun, closing the flower when dark clouds are overhead. Remedial/Medicinal: Dandelion is very nutritious, having more vitamins and minerals than some vegetables. Its rich in Vitamins A and C, and Potassium. The leaves also contain Vitmins B, D, and Iron. Dandelions are excellent herbs for treating the internal organs of the body. Internally, they are a gentle and mild laxative, and clean the liver, kidneys, bladder and related organs and passages within the body. It is also a good herb for urinary tract infections, and when it is necessary to restore health to the liver. Dandelions have been used externally, the gathered juice being excellent for the treatment of acne, boils, and similar skin disorders. The juice may be successfully used to clear eczema, although a decoction of the root may also be employed. Administer as: Fluid and solid extract, decoction, infusion and tincture. Dandelion is a: Aperient, tonic, diuretic, nutrient, anti-bilious, cholagogue, depurative, hepatic, mild laxative and stomachic. |
