image002.jpg        26.10.08           6-A-SIDE RESULT 23.10.08 – O’Carrolls 2 – 2 Hold The Phone

2-2 last Thursday, again struggled with numbers due to injuries - Gus, Tancy and Paddy out. Lee, Dan Bradley and one more were needed but we couldn't round up any of the troops, so Paddy said he would have a run out. Nev, Richie and myself made up the five-and-a-half players. Hold The Phone were up for the challenge and were putting in some strong challenges right from the start. We then found ourselves 1-0 down, can’t remember what had happened to be honest. Then 2-0 not long after, Richie with a great point blank save, then I think a little toe went over the penalty box line and the ref awarded a pen and in it went. So the fight back began and we moved around some of the positions. Truth be told haven't kept a count on the number of posts and saves the keeper made that he knew nothing about that kept them in the game. Although it wasn't a great performance think we deserved the 3 points. In the end I grabbed a goal that snuck in and then Nev chased down the ball and I am not sure he knew much about the goal but it went in! Sure Nev will claim he meant it etc, but I know he didn't because he didn't even know where the ball was when it went in. The clock ran itself down and the boys watching up top tried to claim some penalties for us when their keepers little toe crept over the line but it wasn't to be. At least we didn't lose.

Indeed, at least we didn’t lose – it’s now 20 games since our last defeat at the hands of Hamstrung (3-0) – and the record run stands at 26. Can that be beaten in the final round of 2008? Next week we’re up against the defensive minded Sverge at the late late time of 9.55.

image002.jpg        19.10.08           6-A-SIDE RESULT 16.10.08 – O’Carrolls 3 – 1 Volcanics

We won 3-1 last Thursday, couple of injuries meant Gus and Paddy weren't playing but in stepped Hirdy (we thought) and Lee. Hirdy had confirmed to Tancy he would be playing, other players were myself, Nev and Richie. So with a minute to go until kick off still no sign of the Kiwi/Scottish/English/Maori bloke we all know as Spaz. Tough opposition and we started with five and had to try and grind out a result. Pablo (the ex-Inter player) stepped in for the five minutes he was allowed for and we went 1-0 down. Looking worrying with five players, still no sign of Mr Hird. We managed to pull one back through me, and then Lee scored a screamer and the new tactic was hit it into the corners and run the clock down. In the second half they had a guy sent off, to be fair I had wound him up a bit but he took the bait [and you wear this demeanour that butter wouldn’t melt in your mouth!]. Then we got one more through me with a few minutes left, so all in all a great performance. Cheers Hirdy! Hamstrung were also apologetic about last week, truth be told we think they were a little scared!

That second goal of yours was little a more significant than you think James – it was your 100th 6-A-Side goal at the YMCA – congratulations!

image002.jpg        07.10.08           CATERING MASTERS 7-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT 03RD/04TH/05TH OCTOBER

With $2000 on offer for the winner and $1000 for the runner up, the competition seemed strong. Four groups of six teams - and we were drawn in Group 3 - apparently the GROUP OF DEATH - great to hear! Most know Bill McKinlay Park - it’s a huge pitch; 7-A-Side on the full pitch - sounds very interesting and hard too.

Our first game was Friday evening v Krish services - we won 2-0 with 2 goals from Matt Walker.

Saturday saw us play 3 games at 10.20, 1.20 and 6pm. Very strange. We won 3-0 v Kiwi Vit Sport with goals from Matt Walker (2) and Graham. The afternoon game was a different tale - we got hammered 4-0 by Nandos. Then we trudged off to watch Gayham play for THE ALL STARS V BRISBANE (he was sub ha ha ha ha ha). Saturday nights 6pm was the big one as we were coming up against Papatoetoe's red card Espinoza. Nick Morrison scored to make it 1-0 and the ref got in the way with a minute to go to and a cruel deflection made it 1-1.

That left us needing a victory on Sunday morning to get through to the quarter finals - but of course it was Matt Jenkins birthday
[belated Happy Birthday mate!]. Saturday night's Tunnel of Death was great - I managed to strike a blow into his BIG ccurry gut LOL.

Sunday morning started early - 9.40 kick off - too early for Captain Welton as he missed the start. Gibbo struck the post with a penalty - "at least I hit the post". It seemed like one of those games, until a late winner from the Brummy - 1-0 win. We had to wait on other results but ended up TOP OF THE GROUP on 10pts with Nandos finishing 2nd on 9pts and Espinoza's Eagles missing the top two in third with 8pts. Ha ha ha ha!

So into the quarter finals v Team FX who finished 2nd in their group. From the kick off we could see the main danger was the Fijian international striker with a turn of pace to die for. Poor Bradley didn’t get near the guy. Nick scored the first goal FOR THEM as the Fijian international’s shot was going wide but Nick fancied him so decided to get his gangly legs in the way and the ball trickled home. Matt Walker smashed in the equaliser in the first half, only for Bradley to dummy himself leaving Fiji man to make it 2-1. Matt Walker equalised again late on - but there was one final twist in the tale as the ref spotted a push - YEAH RIGHT. Free kick right on the edge - up stepped Fiji man to smash the ball past the wall leaving Richie stranded to the spot. So a 3-2 loss in the quarter final - I reckon one more game would have finished the lads off.

Great comp though and some fast pacy teams on show. Then back to OC's for Cocktail Sunday. Matt had a double blackjack and found it hard walking home (or even walking)!
