6pm kick off greeted the lads
this week, hoping we could improve on last weeks performance. We started off
with Matt in goal, Jobba and Tancey at the back, Gus centre and Dan G and Gibbo
on the flanks, with Miles up front. Nev, Paddy and James were on the bench.
From the off, OC's dominated the game with close marking and quick breaks - but
our finishing was wayward and these misses would prove costly. Sumo scored
first - it was against the run of play with a quick break and Matt was
beaten from a tight angle. Chances came and went before Miles broke through the
middle and laid the ball across to Gibbo to slide into an empty net. 1-1 at the
break.
More OC's chances were missed in the 2nd half. Sumo scored from their only
chance of the half with a back post header from a seemingly harmless cross.
OC's turned up the heat and another couple of chances went begging before the
final whistle sounded.
This week we were left to wonder how we had lost after dominating most of the
game - I don’t normally single anyone out for special praise but JOBBA WAS
FANTASTIC AND DID NOT PUT A FOOT WRONG ALL NIGHT.

Who are you and
what have you done with Tim? I’ve checked the figures and my maths were
slightly out - it turns out that last weeks game against Inter Oranginos was in
fact the clubs 200th competitive fixture. I nominate Gus to pay a $2 fine on my
behalf, he was always stitching me up for fines. So the boys will have to wait
until at least next Wednesday for the chance to rack up victory number 150,
when we meet Inter Caramello. The same fixture last year was an ill-tempered
affair after one of the Inter lads saw red after an unfortunate incident in the
second half. I can’t remember exactly which OC’s player was involved, but I’d
guess it was probably that temperamental Irishman, Richie O’Neill – he’s always
in the thick of it!

Tim’s words were
‘the less said about this, the better’, so I’ll leave it at that. Instead, on a
more positive note, we’ll look forward to next week’s fixture against Sumo
which marks the milestone of OC’s 200th competitive fixture. A win would also
see OC’s record their 150th competitive victory, quite a record at any level.
Twice we faced this side last season and twice we were the victors. The first
meeting in the grading round was a real battle as Sumo came from two goals down
to level the scores, before a late goal from Olly secured victory for OC’s. The
second meeting was also decided by a single goal, 2-1 was the score, both Olly
and Gibbo on target that day. It would be silly to underestimate the opposition
next week though, they are currently topping the table and possess a real
threat up front (if they have the same squad as last year). Only a solitary
point separates first and fifth, so it really is all the play for with only six
games remaining. Our next two fixtures against Sumo and Inter Caramello are
crucial to our title hopes, so let’s put the disappointment of Wednesday’s
defeat behind us and concentrate on next week.
Completely
unrelated to football (you’ll be interested in this Tancey), I went to see
Morrissey at Camden Roundhouse last night and it was a bloody great gig -
quiffs and National Health specs all over the place! While we did pay nearly
four times the face value for the tickets (Kerri’s fault), it really was worth
it. It was a good mixture of Smiths and solo material and even the new stuff
sounded great. He even dedicated a song to Heath Ledger (Life Is A Pigsty).

Our first game back after the
Xmas and New Year break saw us up against The Immigrants. We lined up with Matt
in goal, Jobba & Tancy at the back, Gibbo & James out wide, and Gus in
the middle with Dan G up front. Olly warmed the bench and also ran the line!
Dan G put us into a early lead before Jobba staked his claim for the 3rd
goalkeeper position, brilliantly tipping a goal bound shot around the post. He
stayed on the pitch, but The Immigrants equalised from the spot. The game
went a bit scrappy until Dan G found some space for a shot, which was handled.
Gus stepped up and stroked the penalty home (Olly was praying for him to miss
on the sideline). The last ten minutes we showed our fitness with Gus, Olly
& Gibbo all finding the net and OC's ran out 5-1 winners.
Hirdy forgot to turn up (he only
seems to turn up when there isn’t a game!!!)

Well done lads, a
winning start to the New Year and OC’s are right there in the mix for the top
spot (if somebody could forward me the weekly table update that would be
great). Next week we face one half of the Inter contingent, Inter Oranginos.
Last season the teams shared the points in a 1-1 draw, Gus with a goal from all
of 20 yards out on that occasion. These are the teams we can’t afford to drop
too many points against if we want to improve on last years fifth place finish.
We took five points from a possible twelve in the games against the four teams
that finished above us last year, so any improvement on that return will put us
right in contention.
