Variable Dancer

Argia fumipennis violacea

Dragonfly Page | Damselfly Page | Home Page

The Variable Dancer is the only North American Pond Damsel with dark brown wings. Unfortunately, the subspecies found in Nebraska (Argia fumipennis violacea or Violet Dancer) has clear wings, thus depriving us of an easy field mark for this very variable species. Males are violet on the head, top of the thorax and abdomen. The top of abdominal segments 8-10 are blue. Females are brown. Both sexes have wide black stripes on the top of the thorax.
