Red Damsel

Amphiagrion species

Dragonfly Page | Damselfly Page | Home Page

Red Damsel males are red with the top of the thorax black. They are tiny but their color makes them stand out in green foliage. Females are orange to red with no black markings. Two species have been identified: the Western Red Damsel (Amphiagrion abbreviatum) and the Eastern Red Damsel (Amphiagrion saucium). Some odonatologists consider them separate species and postulate a third, Midwestern species. Others regard all Red Damsels as belonging to a single species. Stay tuned.
